We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in the history of the United States. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator. If we see this, we can stop it, overcome the movement that brought us to this point, and make a turn towards something better. snyder.substack.com/p/the-next-cou…

The White House has released the draft US budget for 2027. The draft budget includes no aid for Ukraine – neither military, financial, nor humanitarian. At the same time, $18 billion is earmarked for supporting other countries, but without mentioning Kyiv. Key details of the document, which must be approved by Congress: Total spending – $2.16 trillion; The defense budget has increased by 40% (to $1.5 trillion). The focus is on state-of-the-art weaponry: the 6th generation F-47 fighter jet, ammunition; Investments in nuclear weapons, drones, and military AI; Non-military spending has been cut by 10% – to $660.1 billion; $13 billion – for the extraction of critical minerals in the US; NASA's budget is being cut by 23%, but $731 million is being added for the lunar program (human landings are planned for 2028); Contributions to the UN and other organizations are being cut by $2.7 billion; Total funding for international programs is decreasing by 30%—to $35.6 billion—and USAID has begun to disband. Last year's budget only mentioned Ukraine in the context of spending cuts, but at that time, Congress added separate aid to Ukraine—specifically $400 million for security and military support.

Even in darkness, we glow. In this image of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew, we can see the electric lights of human activity. In the lower right, sunlight illuminates the limb of the planet.

European jets shooting down drones over the Middle East while ignoring the skies over Ukraine is pathetic. We are willing to actively defend airspace on another continent, but we refuse to do the exact same thing to protect our own neighbors in Europe

The modest church on the cover of Vice President JD Vance’s new memoir unpacking his Catholic faith has a tiny but loyal congregation. What it doesn’t have, members said: any connection to Vance or Catholicism. wapo.st/4c3da9t

🇺🇸 For the first time in modern history, the Pentagon offered no Good Friday services for Catholics. The Pentagon sent an email to its employees on Friday morning reading: “Just a friendly reminder: There will be a Protestant Service (No Catholic Mass) for Good Friday today at the Pentagon Chapel.” Earlier this year, Pete Hegseth invited his pastor, Doug Wilson, to speak at the Pentagon. Wilson has called for banning public expressions of Catholicism in the United States. Follow: @europa

🔥 STUDENT TO KAROLIE & ERIKA KIRK: “Voter fraud is incredibly rare. According to Heritage, there have only been a few hundred cases... Is it worth it to risk millions of 🇺🇸 voting to prevent a few hundred?” KAROLIE: “I haven’t seen the data. I believe there’s much more.” 🤔

This, right here. All the Fox News-led anti NATO talk (it’s getting a little ridiculous, all the commentators reading off same set of talking points, boring) celebrating Eastern Europe/Baltic states as solid allies (yes, true) seems to then somehow hilariously and spectacularly miss that these very governments absolutely detest Trump-to their core- for his pro Putin stance. Y’all kind of missed this very important point. 🤔
Gideon Rachman@gideonrachman

I’ve got news for you. The governments of Poland and the Baltic states distrust and dislike the Trump administration even more than the western Europeans because they are directly threatened by Trump’s friendliness towards Putin. The UN vote where the US voted with Russia and N.Korea against Ukraine is copied and framed on the wall of the Estonian foreign ministry

@AriFleischer Agreed - NATO will never be the same.👍 Trump systematically betrayed decades of allied trust. To the point where the US became a security risk and Europe realized it can manage fine, or even better, without America. So, drop the blame game - this is 💯 on Trump.
