@bphogan The best career decision I ever made was learning a skill I had little passion for so I could make money. I spent an entire decade trying to make money in my field of interest (music). Stepping away from that immediately changed my financial situation for the better.

Yes! You know what breeds passion? Money to pay your bills and your debts, and good health insurance. Once your needs are met you may just find a part you get passionate about. Or maybe the money fuels an unrelated passion.
Ademusoyo@ademusoyo

We have got to stop telling people to find a specific area of tech that they are “passionate” about and instead to tell people to go a) where they know they’ll be good at, b) will make them money, and c) they will have the most support.

@zkat__ @sarah_edo I have a different definition of legacy code. It's the one that's difficult to understand and safely change, and nobody dares to touch it until it's too late. I write my code to be easy to understand and change so that it never becomes legacy. Nobody likes legacy code.

For those hating Twitter's new font choices, you can override them if you're using desktop Firefox. Install "Stylus" extension. Add a style for Twitter like: * { font-family: Roboto !important; } You can use any font that's on your machine.

@kvlly The majority are vaccinated in my state, WI, but just barely. It makes it hard to figure out if we should be sending our kids back to school in a couple weeks.

It’s really difficult living in a state where a majority of the population won’t get vaccinated.

@zg_dev Haha, all these types of trivia just make me think "well, if you wrote this code so humans code read it the result wouldn't be surprising/mysterious".

@elyktrix You don't have a be passionate to be good at something. Andre Agassi was not passionate about tennis, yet he was the best in the world for years.

Every single week I see someone telling others if they don't have passion they won't get far. Imagine learning to code to IMPROVE YOUR LIFE & constantly seeing this talk & questioning if you're "passionate enough" or doing it for the right reasons. It's exhausting to see this.

Teach kids about spreadsheets, compounding interest, investing, and financial independence. I didn't start learning about this stuff until I was in my late 20's, and didn't take action on it until my 30's. I wish I had started earlier.

@bphogan For whatever reason my vocabulary seems to be significantly above average (maybe it’s the thousands of hours listening to NPR), so I find myself needing to simplify my language on occasion. It’s worth getting to know your audience and catering your language to them.

I could say Defenistrate But I’ll say “throw this out the window”. Because my job is for you to understand. If I use a word you have to Google, I’ve failed to communicate. Some coders and writers love to show how clever they are. it often doesn’t go well for the consumer.

@DThompsonDev Even better is to accomplish things and speak about them. As a person who doesn’t enjoy talking about themselves I struggle with this, but it’s easier to gain social influence if you talk yourself up on occasion.

@GeePawHill I'm working in a code base where database queries are sprinkled everywhere. Do you have suggestions for writing tests for code that involves db queries?

Since recently I started to really like the Dracula 🧛‍♂️ theme for coding, I decided to give my website a small theme overhaul and adapted to colors to match the Dracula theme 👇 marc.dev

@marcba A primary motivator for me in writing readable code is not wanting to curse my own name in six months time.

@BrianHilson At the end of the day I think this is why it's important to hire and keep experts on board to help you ensure your brand is always on point. Adding too much friction to this isn't the fix (imo) because flexibility is key for growth - but I get why this might feel like a solution

I love that feeling where you hand over a website to a client and they immediately make it as bad as they possibly can. Cram 500 words into a page title. Add big bold clashing background images to every section. Delete all necessary content from pages that need it 😭
