1989 was the tail end of old school basic training in the army. They had cohorts divided into “high stress, low stress and medium stress.” I was in a high stress cohort, so that means that the drill sergeants occasionally beat the shit out of people. But then they got investigated and we got new drill sergeants, Right in the middle of basic training. I heard that the “low stress” cohorts had a card in their pocket they carry around, and if they felt stressed out, they would show the card, and the drill surgeon had to stop yelling at them.

As I’ve noted many times, the downplaying of the Korean War as a forgotten war increasingly feels like a deliberate attempt to bury this important western victory in the Cold War.
America and its allies in UN Command saved half of Korea from Stalinism and came close to bestowing western freedom (maybe not at once, but eventual) on the entire peninsula. 52 million South Koreans live in a free, wealthy, and western democratic society with a thriving economy thanks to their and our sacrifices in this war.

The Korean War does not nearly enough attention that it deserves. The US and it's allies successfully defended South Korea's independence from North Korea and China and halted the spread of communism on the Korean peninsula.
