WE OWE MIKE HILLARY MUTEBI MORE THAN SYMPATHY
Now that God has granted us a second chance with coach Mike Ray Mutebi, the real question is: what are we going to do about it?
Mike does not need a handout. He deserves a hand up.
Uganda, and especially Ugandan football, owes him for the professionalism par excellence (such a rare thing in Uganda, let alone in the sometimes murky world of Ugandan football), the discipline, intelligence, and professionalism he brought to the game.
Moreover, at a time (since 1997) when such qualities were almost unthinkable amid the sometimes gutter or ghetto attitude towards football — as opposed to games like golf, rugby, and basketball, which have traditionally been more elite.
Mike was almost counter-cultural! For example, @TimKalyegira will be impressed that Mike, who went to Namilyango College, insisted on English as the official working language for his teams. A lifelong Johan Cruyff disciple of total football, coach Mike was a stickler for punctuality, good work methods, and data-driven decision-making.
