Although 4th edition was largely ignored by my friends, who have been playing together for nearly 25 years, Dnd never faded for me. We have always customized each edition with our own house rules, adding what we enjoy and removing what we do not. Since the game runs on imagination and time spent with good friends, we have consistently shaped it into the experience we want.
To prevent burnout, we have rotated through other systems such as RECON, Star Wars, d20 Modern, and Warhammer, just to name a few. Even so, DnD has always remained my favorite.
I understand that the recent direction toward a soft cuddly tone has not sat well with many players, understandably so. Like with other editions, we chose to ignore the parts that did not fit our style and kept our version of DnD gritty and dark, focused on real stakes and life or death consequences.
