Great to team up with @Drsharkbrain @NickDulvy @BritFinucci to bring sharks, rays, and chimaeras to the larger discourse on deep-sea mining. Much more to come! This was also my first-first author paper and I’m excited that it was on this topic!

Ghost shark babies. These are Spotted Ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei) hatchlings! Floating in suspended animation. These super rare specimens are almost mini-adults when they emerge from their egg cases, complete with a ferocious fin spine! 👻🦈 #ghostshark

Overfishing has halved populations of the chondrichthyan fishes – sharks, rays, and chimaeras – since 1970. Target fisheries and incidental capture (bycatch), in particular, has resulted in over one-third threatened with extinction. #GlobalSharkTrends 🧵4/20 #EndOverfishing #SustainableDevelopmentGoals

90% of shark & ray species are overfished, & 99% of bycatch ends up sold or consumed. This isn’t just about fins - the meat trade is even bigger. Add habitat loss & climate change, & we’re looking at a crisis that could reshape our oceans. More below: saveourseas.com/the-iucns-repo…
