@GalacticHotTake @DrewPavlou What's easier to change when we already have the second highest rate of homebuilding in the World and with the economic conditions not encouraging a higher rate?

@DrewPavlou Interesting point. Immigration and housing costs are often linked, but policy and supply measures matter too.

@DrewPavlou So, does decreasing immigration lead to lower rent? Be very careful before you answer.

@edge_always @realRick_AUS Things are fine on the ground in Japan with its falling population. In any case it would be politically impossible for immigration to be halted completely.

Why haven’t we completely stopped immigration at this point?

@jmil400 @realRick_AUS Short memory - it didn't crash during covid with zero NOM for 2 years. Also countries with stable populations are doing fine - even thriving.

@Peter_Fitz Her proposals always get voted down on party lines (eg a plebiscite on immigration levels). So it's hardly her fault that she hasn't achieved much. And that will change once she gets sufficient numbers in parliament.

@Ryandally08 They better not have a car accident when they drive away....with all that fuel in the back of the vehicle they are putting innocent people in danger. There should be a law against excess fuel containers being loaded in a vehicle.

@incloudno9 @realRick_AUS One rando on Twitter doesn't disprove my point. Even One Nation is talking about issuing 130,000 visas a year. In demand STEM workers would unlikely to miss out under those figures. And the market will take care of the rest - higher wages will attract workers to those sectors.

@Bro2John @realRick_AUS The word "completely" in the first tweet gave me that impression! But again massive critical shortage I see in STEM in my field. And hear from sister companies.

@incloudno9 @realRick_AUS Hardly anyone is talking about stopping immigration completely. And there is less demand for workers without a ballooning population. Countries with stable populations manage fine and don't have critical worker shortages.

@realRick_AUS You need to build capability and skills starting yesterday so you can stop immigration 7-10 from now. There is a huge lack of skills esp technical, engineering, STEM... When you don't know that, immigration seems like a net negative for sure!

@mangroves4eva @realRick_AUS Such as a semi permanent per capita recession, stagnant wages, slump in productivity growth, housing crisis, the least complex economy in the developed World? Doesn't look like it's working for us to me.

@realRick_AUS Have you ever done any reading on how Immigration works in the context of the economy? Or any reading? Ever?

@armitagesh @Ryandally08 That old trope. You could say that about nearly every country - it doesn't justify any level of immigration going forward. You can't be very intelligent.

@Ryandally08 It's always funny watching white European colonists, who stole their country, complain when other non-white migrants come to join in their comfortable lifestyle. Also fighting over various Middle Eastern religions, lol. As dense as the sun.

#BREAKING Think that this is Baghdad Iraq? It’s the Sydney suburb of Lakemba where a large group of Muslims have cordoned off the street to pray in the middle of the road. Anthony Albanese is actively trying to destroy Australia’s identity.

@Bro2John @kitnuke666 @DrewPavlou But right now, for several years, Australian GDP per capita has been dropping, and that rarely gets a mention. That is why we have so many immigrants

The Labor Party and the Liberals combined to add 10% to the population of Australia in just 5 years. Here is what this genius economic policy did to housing costs in my city of Brisbane: - The four-bedroom house I rent with room mates costs $900 a week, up from $500 a week in 2020. So we pay $20,800 a year extra for the exact same house. - The house would have sold for $700,000 in 2020. It’s now worth $1.3 million despite no material changes to the house. - You could have bought the house for a 10% deposit of $70,000 back in 2020 and paid $2,500 a month in mortgage repayments. - Now you need to save $130,000 to make a 10% deposit and need to pay $7,015 a month in mortgage repayments. - Current rent is $3,600 a month. The mortgage would be $7,015 a month. It is literally cheaper to rent forever than to take on 30 years of debt to own the same property. - When I tried to rent this property I had to first apply for 70 different places and was rejected from almost every single one. I would line up for a house inspection with hundreds of other people, most of whom arrived in the country extremely recently. - Australia has the second highest dwelling construction rate in the OECD. Yet we still have a housing crisis. Ghee, I wonder why people are mad. Must be online bots and discontinuation mate.

@DrunkAt12 @kitnuke666 @DrewPavlou It would unlikely be permanent. The economy will rebalance away from the ticket clipping industries and become more productive. Countries with stable populations are doing fine - even thriving.

@JIMJIM1612 Why do you think Pocock is compromised by taking donations from the local community collective Climate 200 but don’t think Pauline Hanson is compromised by taking money from Climate Change denialist and Billionaire Gina Rinehart, and the Fossil fuel industry?

@kitnuke666 @DrunkAt12 @DrewPavlou Strawman - I never said it was the only factor. But it the main driver - also something we can easily do something about, unlike interest rates and cost of materials that are stopping us building more homes. Also cutting immigration will have many other welcome effects.

@Bro2John @DrunkAt12 @DrewPavlou They do, but it's not purely because of immigration like you're trying to make it out to be. You're screaming immigration without considering everything else that affects inflation. You've simplified it down to one thing because that's what is the loudest at the moment

@Bro2John @DrunkAt12 @DrewPavlou Interstate migration did yes, Melbourne has not had nearly as much increase rental price, higher vacancies compared to Brisbane. Sorry I should clarify for you, I am talking about White Australian migration. Not international migration here.

@Bro2John @DrunkAt12 @DrewPavlou Do you know what the divorce /breakup rate that occurred during and after covid? Rates going up, causing landlord to not be able to cover mortgages with the rent, or landlords raising it because they could.
