Fun fact. The 1980 Hungarian short Oscar winning film ‘The Fly’ was created from nearly 4,000 crayon drawings.

You need to brush up on your film history. “The 70’s was a golden age of cinema?” I disagree. Sure there was some stellar films in that decade but there was a huge heap of shit too. The death of independent film and creativity is much more complicated than “the 70’s were better bro”

The 1970s are widely seen as a “golden age” for cinema. New Hollywood kicked off when the old cigar-chomping studio suits finally lost their grip and let a bunch of young, bearded, slightly scruffy film-school rebels take the wheel. Guys like Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg and Lucas got handed the keys and just went for it. No safety nets, no focus groups, just pure creative freedom. And what came out of it? Some of the best, grittiest, most daring films ever made, stuff that still feels alive and dangerous 50 years later. The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver… absolute classics. Towards the end of the decade, the smell of big money got too strong for studios to resist. Blockbusters started taking over, Heaven’s Gate was a colossal flop, which gave them every excuse, as studios panicked and yanked control back from the “Movie Brats”. Ever since, it’s been the corporate, high-stakes, franchise-first machine we’ve got today. Cinema’s been in a slow decline ever since. In other words… yeah, this is a good thing.

“Iron Lung” pulled in an estimated $8.9 million on Friday for a first-place finish, an impressive result considering the film was self-distributed and funded by YouTube superstar Mark Fischbach, aka Markiplier. Domestic gross should climb to $17 million through Sunday, well past initial projections of $10 million. bit.ly/4a87Z78

I will not accept this newfangled historical revisionism claiming the prequels are good. They are not good. We knew they weren't good when we saw them opening night in the theaters. I was 12 years old when TPM came out and I was the biggest Star Wars nerd on the planet. Had all the EU books, toys, video games, you name it. I got Star Wars "banned" from my elementary school because we started two opposing Star Wars clubs and one kid ended up getting so mad arguing about Star Wars he punched another kid. Lol. The principal called us into the office and said "Today, you're joining Star Wars clubs. Tomorrow, you're joining gangs." I had to duct-tape over my Darth Vader backpack to take it to school. All of that, and when we went to see Phantom Menace, we were bored out of our skulls. There's this narrative that hating the prequels is "reddit-coded" or just cynical people who saw some YouTube video about them and decided they're bad. Nope. We knew they were bad at the time. We kind of ironically enjoyed the second 2 films, going in knowing they would be bad and everything, in the same way prequel memes ironically revere the film. The prequels have good elements - the technology was super-impressive for the time. Duel of the Fates. Maul/Qui-Gon/Obi duel. Interesting ideas and some interesting new worlds. There is maybe the bones of a good story buried somewhere in there. But they are painful to watch. Dialog, acting, plot, characters - none of them work. We should care that this teenager is turning into Darth Vader. But we do not care. That's failure on an epic scale. Yes, Disney Star Wars sucked. Yes, Disney Star Wars failed to clear the very low bar of "do not make a Star Wars movie that clearly hates Star Wars." That does not magically make the prequels good. I've heard it said that the prequels are good ideas, poorly done, while the Disney films are bad ideas, well done. I'm not sure if that's quite right, but what I think it means is if George had handed writing, maybe some directing, casting, editing, etc. off to experts, they could have been great. By way of contrast, most individual scenes of the Disney films are well-shot and acted and competently done. There's just no saving the story they tried to tell.

It's because it sucks. Hope this helps.

Hollywood convinced generations of a dystopian future because happiness was too boring for movies.  We need better storytellers to show how our future will be abundant.

Minnesota resident was trying to go try a new burger restaurant She says Minnesota ICE protesters stopped her car, they checked her license plate and won’t let people pass until their plates are ran It’s insane that this is happening in America “So now we need permission to drive from these people?” This is what she said happened: ‘My friend told us about a dive burger place in Minnesota that we absolutely had to try. As we were driving in, we passed a small group of maybe 30 people holding large “F ICE” signs, spelled out. Many of the houses in the neighborhood also had signs saying “F ICE” and similar messages. When we were leaving to drive back to the hotel, we passed the group again. At that point, the resistance group stepped out in front of our car and would not let us drive. One woman appeared to be looking at our license plate and doing something on her phone. She was standing directly in front of the car, blocking us — I cannot imagine being a sane person and living in this city. We were with my brother-in-law’s family, and they said that restaurants and other places are empty because of this, the resistance is out doing their thing, and the normal people are just staying home and not going out.’
