@KPJRFilms I do believe we have to strengthen families first. So much flows from that foundation. I came to see this in my own story; my mother was truly struggling with her own difficulties and she clearly needed a support system.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Q8: According to the US Senate Committee on Finance, just 3% of foster youth have a bachelor’s degree. 24% experience homelessness & 53% are unemployed 5 years after aging out. @istevepemberton, how can we break this cycle of #trauma & neglect? #KPJRBookClub

@KPJRFilms It IS a crisis. We are living in a time when so many of our societies challenges are landing on the shoulders of our children, whether it be a global pandemic or massive income inequality. We need a multi-pronged strategy, from more foster families, more resources to prevent /1

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Q1: @istevepemberton, why do you begin “A Chance In The World” w/an epigraph from mythology scholar Edith Hamilton?“The fullness of life is in the hazards of life. And, at the worst, there is that within us, which can turn defeat into victory.”#KPJRBookClub

@KPJRFilms We tend to ATTRIBUTE emotion instead of accurately reading how they’re feeling. I feel like crap.. you must feel that way (or I want you to feel that way) ! :) The ONLY true way to know how someone is feeling is to ask the question & really listen! #KPJRBookClub #PermissionToFeel

@KPJRFilms @marcbrackett Sometimes emotions motivate us to be the best we can be, but they can also bring out the worst in the human condition. Trying to understand what motivates us for good- to be those kind, caring, compassionate people we all wish we had in our lives- is the key. #KPJRBookClub

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Q2- @marcbrackett you mention that “emotions are information,” influencing our attention, memory, learning, decision making, relationships, health, & creativity. How do emotions affect each of these areas in our life, in both good and bad ways? #KPJRBookClub

#MentalHealthMonth Programs aimed at “adult” problems—poverty, depression, etc.—often don't consider the emotional wellbeing of children affected by them. #MentalHealthMonth There is no health without mental health. The emotional well-being of children is tied to the functioning of their caregivers & the communities in which they live. Reducing the stressors affecting children requires addressing the stresses on their families.

Watched the documentary "Broken Places". Every at-risk child needs an encouraging support system to build strong resilient children and adults. Early investment in Public Health is cheaper than paying to incarcerate. There is hope @BrokenPlacesDoc smile.amazon.com/Broken-Places-…
