This is a rosy maple moth. It's pink and yellow, fuzzy, and in decline. A parasitic fly, released by the US government in the early 1900s to control gypsy moths, has been quietly devastating its populations. To help save this moth: plant red maple, sugar maple, or silver maple. Artificial light disrupts their navigation and mating, so try to reduce excessive outdoor lighting. Leave leaf litter under your trees so the pupae can overwinter safely in the soil.

The banana peel you tossed on the trail is going to get a bear killed. Every single apple core and orange peel left on a trail teaches a nearby bear that human hiking trails are a food source. In bears, it is almost always fatal. Wildlife managers have a phrase for it: "A fed bear is a dead bear." Once a bear associates humans with food it keeps coming back. It gets bolder. It approaches campsites. It gets too close to people. At that point there is no rehabilitation, no relocation that reliably works. The bear gets euthanized. The bear didn't do anything wrong. It learned exactly what we taught it. Leave no trace means leave no trace. Pack it in. Pack it out. Every time.

There's a dirty secret hiding in that "wildflower mix" you bought. University of Washington researchers grew 19 wildflower seed packets and found that every single one contained between 3 and 13 invasive species. Eight contained plants classified as noxious weeds in at least one US state. One third of the packets listed no contents at all. Only 5 of the 19 accurately listed what was inside. The most common plant across all the mixes? Bachelor's button: beautiful, popular, and invasive in native grasslands across the country. You buy the packet because you want to help pollinators. You might be introducing plants that crowd out the natives those pollinators actually need. What to do instead: buy from native plant nurseries specific to your region, or look for seed mixes from local native plant societies that list every species. If a packet doesn't tell you what's in it, don't plant it.
