Irish American patriots were Irish-born immigrants and their descendants who played a vital role in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.  Their contributions spanned military leadership, naval command, intelligence, and political influence. James McHenry, born in Ballymena, served as a trusted aide to Washington at Valley Forge, signed the U.S. Constitution, and later became Secretary of War.  Fort McHenry, where the Star-Spangled Banner was written, bears his name. John Barry, born in County Wexford, Ireland, is hailed as the "Father of the American Navy".  He commanded the first U.S. warship commissioned by Congress, the USS Lexington, and led key naval victories during the war. Post-war, he became the first commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and helped establish its foundational structures. Hercules Mulligan, an Irish-born tailor in New York, served as a spy for the Continental Army.  Using his shop as a cover, he gathered intelligence from British officers and helped save George Washington’s life on multiple occasions. Stephen Moylan, from County Cork, served as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army and led one of the first cavalry units.  He was also the first to use the term "United States of America" in official correspondence. Richard Montgomery, a Dublin native who defected from the British Army, led the 1775 invasion of Canada and died heroically in the Battle of Quebec, becoming one of the Revolution’s early martyrs. Historians estimate that up to 25% of the Continental Army consisted of Irish-born soldiers or those of Irish descent.  These patriots were driven by a shared desire for liberty, resentment of British rule, and the hope of a new life in America.
