@rhaplord These books are good for introducing people to history Historians hate them because obviously they're extremely knowlegable, there are no "brief summary of humanity" that could EVER please historians because they're too specialized personally big proponent of this and Sapiens

@MeathGuerilla No one thinks that nations didn't exist. NATIONALISM didn't exist until the 18th century. Quit lying.

The dumbest leftslop idea is that nations didn’t exist until the 19th century. Ethnolinguistic signifiers have been identified as the binding unit of a collective political identity since ancient Sumer lol, the distinction is really the relationship of the nation to sovereignty

i’ve noticed a couple people my age using the expression “love you longtime” as an expression of endearment and i’m kinda confused cause isn’t that phrase orientalist/racist?

honestly, the funniest thing about this entire thing is that much of the most visible elements of the Civil Rights Movement relied on racist Southern white people losing their shit. They didn't have to! They didn't have to bomb churches or buses or arrest anyone or shoot anyone to death in their driveway! But they just couldn't help themselves. Sad!

What if the citation is to a source that is not available online and is in a language one of the authors doesn't understand? What if the paper has a hundred citations and one of the authors is an extraordinarily productive scholar who has better things to do than check the accuracy of citations that other authors put into the paper?

Every few years, another dope dusts off the old "Did you KNOW that Rosa Parks PLANNED her protest?" routine and acts like he's found something secret and scandalous.
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@ReichlinMelnick

I feel like Rosa Parks' story is also very well-known? The version the screenshot discusses is basically the elementary school version. By high school, I had already been taught the fuller context of her advocacy, and learned about Claudette Colvin as well.

one of my personal unpopular opinions is that if a lot of classics were released today, booktok/booktwt wouldn't like them and say they had terrible prose and were too slow paced. Not just Fitzgerald, but even works from the Brontë sisters, or Austen, or what have you.
Clarissa Aykroyd@stoneandthestar

Just saw The Great Gatsby described as "unreadable". You can dislike it, go right ahead, but it is one of the most easy-to-read classics I can think of (& beautifully written at the same time). Open the schools.

@anecdotal There's a big difference between, "It doesn't matter which of our degreed professors who went through multiple rounds of vetting to be hired teaches the course," and "It doesn't matter if the course is taught by a credentialed professor or a vending machine."

Even at Chicago, students are told their choice of professor is irrelevant: it shouldn’t matter to you who is teaching you. This is how institutions become vulnerable to AI disruption. If it doesn’t matter who is teaching the class, why not AI?
The Chicago Maroon@ChicagoMaroon

Professors’ names will no longer be visible to students pre-registering for social science and civilization studies Core courses beginning with autumn quarter 2026, several professors in the Social Sciences Collegiate Division told the Maroon. chicagomaroon.com/52530/news/sos…

If minimum wage is good enough for everyday Americans why isn’t it good enough for those in Congress? Why can’t they freeze their assets while serving and live off the basic income? And if the response is “that’s not a living wage” then Congress has a responsibility to raise it.

@DubiousCA It makes a huge difference, because there specifically was not anyone sitting down and making a top 100 list. There were a bunch of people who could only pick their favorite 10. That is ENORMOUSLY different.

Ok let’s end this: “hot dog sauce” is not a thing here in the United States. We use mustard (mostly yellow, but also brown), along with ketchup, pickle relish (sweet and dill), onions, chili, kraut, tomato pickle & sport peppers (Chicago), cream cheese (Seattle), nacho cheese sauce, jalapeños, and other things. But we do not have “hot dog sauce”. We DO have burger sauce
Milkyray🪽🥛DOKOMI@Milkmeray

i just found out my American friend doesn't know what hotdog sauce is. It literally has an american flag on the bottle of hotdog sauces wdym they don't have it and never heard of it? Germany just made that shit up!???😭😭 HUHHH
