It was an absolute massacre the entire tournament. We still haven’t seen a tournament run like that. Closest game was 12 points.

Every year around this time I remember that the 2009 Tar Heels basketball team rolled the tournament with an average margin of victory of 20.2 points. One of my favorite squads in tourney history.

Arizona had 90 (90!) combined paint points and made free throws against Arkansas. According to ESPN Research, that’s the most in an NCAA tournament game in the last 20 years — and they’re the only team since 2000 w/ 60 paint points and 30 made free throws in an NCAA tourney game.

North Carolina was 24-6 on March 5th and getting ready to get Caleb Wilson back that weekend against Duke. Wilson suffered a season-ending injury that afternoon in practice. The Tar Heels never won a game the rest of the year. 19 days later, Hubert Davis lost his job.
