Yall are gonna hate me for saying this, but the reason restaurants have a tipping system instead of normal pay (besides the obvious savings in paying for labor) is that tipping culture gives you pretty waitresses and bartenders. If those 2 jobs were normal paying jobs, you'd have normal looking people doing it. If servers were paid minimum wage with no tips, your server would be a 48 year old fat guy that would be eating your leftovers. He wouldn't give a shit if your food was late, cold, tasty or whatever. Your beer would be late and warm. Your cocktail would have a little less alcohol in it. When his shift was over he would just leave whether your meal was ready or not. Yall would save a few bucks, but your dining experience would suck so bad you'd start going to drive-thru fast food joints. That being said, only tip if you have a human being taking your order. The corporation employing that person pays them almost nothing. (Some paychecks are literally less than a dollar after taxes). The situation you're describing is essentially a vending machine experience, and a tip is unnecessary in such a case, imho.

Genuine question on a restaurant situation: You walk up to a counter to order. You find your own table and seat yourself. If you order coffee, they hand you a cup and you go fill it up yourself. If you order food, they hand you a buzzer and when it goes off, you go pick it up yourself. The iPad has a “20%, 25%, 30%, Other” tip option, with 20% already preselected. What’s your move?
