Japan Syndrome: An affliction that befalls foreign visitors who realize in sudden horror the dysfunction, squalor and chaos they live in is a choice
BSAT Properties@BSAT_Properties

I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly." The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal. When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience." Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable. When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates. I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped. The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault." I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology." Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident. Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize." I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time." They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again." I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes. © 6IX.

Less a statement on relative/historical importance and more on setting/communication avenue — can’t help but think to FDR’s radio-broadcasted fireside chats during the Depression. And given the lack of any notable developments on the US front + promises of future such addresses — why now? Hard to imagine this not being some kind of pre-conditioning for worse news yet to come and a preemptive point of the finger. Perhaps masking forewarning of detrimental political news as high-minded “forward guidance.” #cdnpoli

During the Global Financial Crisis, when there was a real risk of panic, I developed a practice called ‘forward guidance.’ The situation we find ourselves in today demands the same. Watch the full video on YouTube: youtu.be/uk2TZwkhi4E

From Oshawa — my hometown’s getting hammered today. Standing on our soapboxes to make us feel good with zero sign of tangible results is definitely working. Two truths: A. Trump can be unreliable and not value our relationship whatsoever B. Our strategy of practicing realpolitik with the rest of the world but not our closest economic partner is naive and short-sighted Or we can stick our heads in the sand while blue collar communities get eviscerated. Won’t hold my breath waiting for the unaffected chattering class to discuss this like adults. #cdnpoli

You know what's cynical? Claiming to reverse yourself on everything from carbon taxes to pipelines to capital gains taxes to oil tanker bans to digital services taxes to emissions caps to immigration to electricity regulations to bail reform without a shred of humility or shame.

Most “new right” thinkers/operatives (at least in the Canadian context) are ex-libertarians/classical liberals. This is what our opponents don’t understand. We get their worldview better than they get ours. We are informed by the obvious failures of our previous perspective.

It often feels like the political establishment expects younger Canadians to quietly accept the decline of our country. But it shouldn't be surprising when young people organize and speak up. The status quo isn't working, life is getting harder, and the gatekeepers won't listen.

The new standard for housing policy. Anything less than this across the country can and should be described as generational warfare and economic idiocy. Zero sum. Kudos to @_MarkSutcliffe and the team.
Dean Tester@DeanTester

This morning, Mayor @_MarkSutcliffe announced Ottawa's Housing Action Plan. I've been his biggest critic. I've delegated countless times at City Hall urging him to get serious. I've spent years calling for major reforms. And today... he delivered. This is probably the most ambitious housing plan in the country. And more importantly, it's a clear, direct, written commitment from the Mayor to make Ottawa the most housing friendly city in Canada. Almost everything we've been fighting for since I launched Make Housing Affordable is in this plan. To his credit, the Mayor and his team brought us in. They acknowledged mistakes were made in the past. They asked us what needed to change. They listened. They acted. There will still be more to push for. And some of the details still need to be filled in. But this is a major YIMBY victory in Ontario's second biggest city. And I am grateful to Mayor Sutcliffe and his team for having the courage to admit they were wrong and for working to make so much positive change so quickly. Here are a few of the highlights: - Undertaking review of development charges and parkland charges with goal of lowering both - Suspending the Community Benefits Charge - Deferring development charges until occupancy - Deferring collection of cash-in-lieu of parkland until occupancy - Capping cash-in-lieu of parkland for transit-oriented development - Increasing maximum heights in transit hubs and major corridors - Review of urban design guidelines that are restricting development - Extending site plan control exemptions to developments under 10 units - Comprehensive review of secondary plans which are limiting development near transit stations downtown - Reducing number of studies required for development - Reduce complexity of pre-consultations - Removing duplicate reviews by accepting studies from certified professionals - Remove zoning barriers for modular and prefabricated homes - Broaden zoning provisions to increase the potential for gentle density in neighbourhoods On some of these items, we'll be urging the Mayor's office to go further, faster. But today, we'll be celebrating this as a major win - the culmination of years of advocacy and hard work.
