This will be a short story, so I'd appreciate it if you could stay for a minute, maybe two max. It's the story of a certain small program. I did say small, so obviously, this isn't going to be a story about Blender 3D.
As I mentioned before, I want to start my journey with the X community by sharing my work. Specifically, I'll be posting the pieces I created while learning various tools to bring my vision to life. Here is a cosmic techno pillow I modeled in #Blender 3D while learning cloth simulation. Finding it in the depths of my old HDDs reminded me of a story. You see, those details—the "engraving" on it—aren't actual geometry. It's faked using a displacement map. This map was "generated" (and no, not with prompts 😉) in a program called JSplacement. The software was free to download, though you could voluntarily donate some cash to the author.
Even though the author specified how the program could be used, people started breaking the rules. They began generating various maps, organizing them, and selling them as asset packs on different marketplaces. They were simply scamming people by selling something that was completely free. What do you think the author did? Of course, it was his program, and he could do whatever he wanted with it. However, I think he made the worst possible choice. I understand him, but I don't support his decision. The developer completely removed the program from his website—and eventually took down the entire site. Responding to numerous questions, he finally broke his silence. He stated that he’d simply had enough, that people were ungrateful, and that he was done with them. At first, I was sad that he abandoned the project. My only consolation was that I had managed to download the installer in time, which I still keep to this day. But that sadness didn't last long. Do you know what happened? A few enthusiasts banded together and built a similar, more advanced alternative. They put it right on the web, and it's completely free as well. You can find it here: displacementx.pages.dev . It's open-source.
While doing some research, I noticed there's also a web version that looks exactly like the original software from the installer: jsplacementweb.pages.dev/#
What did this story remind me of? It reminded me that the world hates a vacuum. Whenever something disappears, something else will take its place sooner or later. It's never wise to make hasty decisions, especially in a fit of anger. Those are the dumbest decisions you can possibly make. Then there’s perhaps the biggest cliché, and probably the hardest one to actually practice: dedicating your time to the people who stand by you. Stop wasting your time, energy, and potential on haters or people who just want to exploit you. Sure, these are all clichés. But how often do we forget things as simple as buckling our seatbelts before driving off, or plugging in our phones to charge at night?
As for my test #art project itself: the modeling and texturing were done in Blender 3D; the displacement texture was generated in JSplacement; and the animation, flickering, and a few kaleidoscope effects were done in #DaVinciResolve.
