I adore this animal! She's a raft spider, Dolomedes fimbriatus from Whixall Moss @MeresandMosses. She floats on the surface waiting for her prey and can even jump high off the surface to escape predators like frogs! If it's windy, she will put her legs in the air and sail! 📸3

We've just published the genome of a pied hoverfly, Scaeva pyrastri. She is a voracious aphid predator & pollinator & so is v useful for agriculture. Amazingly, she also migrates from N Europe to potentially sub-Saharan Africa each Autumn! @darwintreelife wellcomeopenresearch.org/articles/8-83
