Before it, the majority of South Africans were locked out of skilled jobs, ownership, and education opportunities. Today, black South Africans make up over 80% of the workforce, and there’s been a steady increase in black professionals, managers, and business owners, that shift didn’t happen by accident. Without BEE: Major banks like Nedbank and Capitec would likely still reflect pre-1994 hiring patterns, where black professionals were severely underrepresented. Corporate supply chains wouldn’t prioritise small black-owned businesses, meaning far fewer entrepreneurs would have access to funding and contracts. Universities would be far less accessible, today, the majority of students in public universities are black, compared to a minority before 1994. Workplace diversity, procurement transformation, and skills development programmes simply wouldn’t exist at this scale. Is BEE perfect? No. There are issues with implementation and abuse in some areas. If you want to critique it, at least understand what BBBEE actually is first, then we can have a proper, informed conversation🙏🙏🙏
