Ask a colleague why they refuse to use their extremely convenient car, and bike or walk to work instead. They say it's the pollution. You point out that pollution from commuting automobiles is far smaller than you'd think. Then it's car accidents. You mention bike accidents are more dangerous. Then, finally: The process is the point. The struggle. The muscle soreness. The breeze on your face, the smell of the spring air. How they're afraid that if we automate all forms of physical exertion, we'll end up with atrophied bodies and a blinkered appreciation of the world. It's not reasoning. They're ra...well, hold on. Actually, they kind of have a point! What if there is a problem with automating every single form of physical exertion, including recreational activities? What if humans are too tempted by frictionless efficiency? What if we slowly lose unquantifiable goods? Ah, forget it. That's probably me just rationalizing my gut instincts.

Ask a colleague why they refuse to use AI. They say it uses up all that water. You point out the water use is far smaller than some would have them believe. Then it's the hallucinations. You mention accuracy has improved dramatically. Then, finally: the process is the point. The struggle. The craft. The deeply human act of sitting with uncertainty. They're not reasoning. They're rationalizing their gut intuitions. My amazing student @vicoldemburgo, with Éloïse Côté, Reem Ayad, @yorl, Jason Plaks and I have a new preprint that explores this more thoroughly, called "The Moralization of Artificial Intelligence". We started by asking how moralized AI has become in public discourse. Analyzing 69,890 news headlines from 2018 to 2024, we found that AI was moralized at levels comparable to GMOs and vaccines, technologies whose moral opposition has been studied for decades. It ranked above both. The sharpest spike came within weeks of ChatGPT's launch in late 2022. When we surveyed representative samples of Americans, a majority of AI opponents said their views wouldn't change even if AI proved safe and beneficial. That's consequence insensitivity, the hallmark of moral conviction, not practical calculation. Across art, chatbots, legal tools, and romantic companions, AI moralization loaded onto a single latent factor. A global moral stance, dressed up in whatever practical language is available. The behavioral data make this concrete: a one standard deviation increase in moralization scores predicted a 42% drop in actual AI usage, even when it would have benefited that person personally. The conviction preceded the behavior by up to 573 days. The next time someone gives you three different reasons to oppose AI, each one dissolving under mild scrutiny, you're probably not watching someone think. You're watching someone feel. 🎢Sad news from Margate, where Britain's oldest rollercoaster - the utterly brilliant Dreamland Scenic Railway - is now closed, permanently. According to statements, up to 5 hours of daily new safety checks are needed to operate it safely, and that burden effectively makes operation unviable. The park says that extensive consultation has been made on this - so I've no reason to doubt the professional opinions expressed in this. But it is nonetheless a sad outcome for something which had previously been rescued a number of times - and was a proper highlight and for many like me, the reason for visiting Margate's Dreamland park. theisleofthanetnews.com/2026/01/28/dre…

@figureight It's a reality of the medium that is genuinely an incredible skill and craft, but does always detract from that magical initial vibe. Same goes for the style of comedy. First season Bob's Burgers had a great, realistic rapport between the family that hasn't been the same since.

@figureight First seasons of animated programmes usually conform closer to the style of the original artists/designers, which is always really refreshing to see. But keeping up that pace of production means streamlining the art style to be easier for teams to work with at speed.

Bob's Burgers had this really cool more raw and indie animation style in the 1st season that gets completely sterilised as they make it more fluid and hand drawn, and it kinda ruins the vibe for me.

Making some interactive elements for our game prototype. Keeping that texel density consistency is so important! And keeping a strong distinction between interactive elements (red) vs non interactive. What kind of game are we making? 👀

We just playtested our game prototype for the first time and it was so much fun! I forgot how versatile Unity is. Here's some fun test assets I've made for it. It's really fun using a low texel density (48px/m!). Purposely choosing a lower res aesthetic for a quick turnaround.

If Jim Ratcliffe wore 10 real £40,000 Rolex's on each arm, and they all got stolen, and he went into London every single day. It would take him 5,000 days, 13.7 years, and 100,000 Rolex's to pay back the £4bn he has dodged in taxes.

@figureight English has letters that modify the vowel before the consonant before, c.f. 'hat' vs 'hate'. I think you'll do fine. ;)

@figureight I gave this a stab in the late 2000s before I got distracted by other things, but I still get a giddy little joy when I see those beautiful letters.

@Nortuet The whole thing is paranoia inducing. I never got over the art hurdle of hating everything I made because it didn't match what was in my head, but I'd still say I was a 5. So what was I comparing it with?

Controversial take but we're all 5 with varying degrees of translating knowing what something looks like into what we preceive as a "visual". Like, Im a 5, but I also know the dataset for aphantasia is all just "trust me bro" stuff, and 5's are the only ones just being honest.
