I don’t think Stoke on Trent stn is depressing at all: at its entrance is an incredible moving piece of architecture which few people actually realise exists at all. The stone arch – through which all passengers pass - is a memorial to the 152 North Staffordshire Railway employees who died in the 1914-18 War.
The company & employees paid for it, and its installation - honouring those who stood and fell - was one of the final acts of the independent company before it was consumed by the LMS Railway in 1923. Six further men, identified since the end of WW1, have also now had their names added to the roll of honour.

In the most depressing train station. Any guesses
English

@MrTimDunn The problem isn't the station, more what it's attached to. Leave the confines of the uni and it INSTANTLY turns into a dive.
A friend was badly beaten returning from Hanley once and I was assaulted upon a recent return. There's also the World War Z story...

Britain’s @RoyalMail Postbus fleet eventually ran to more than 220 across the mainland & many islands; but they’re all gone now. @thepostalmuseum has one of the beepy-beepy little buses on display, but I’ll have to make do with this model. More #postbus joy in thread below…

The loss of the integrated Scottish Post Bus services was not only a major inconvenience to the locals but also to tourism. The Post Bus waits for services North and South to cross at Achnasheen in August 1977

@cliffordbeeton @ipswichcouk I hope that you have a super weekend in the sun.
English

@MrTimDunn @ipswichcouk Perhaps you could answer why YOU always try to portray Nigel Farage and Reform as bad,yet the increasing majority of the electorate seem to want even more of him ? A bit like Brexit.Majority voted to leave but the London Bubble still cannot accept it 10 years after the vote!
English

In a transparent & fair democracy, elected local officials in public service are held to account by journalists. In Ipswich, Reform’s chair doesn’t want scrutiny of his party’s councillors. I’m fascinated that their voters would support this. @ipswichcouk ipswich.co.uk/we-dont-need-y…
English

@cliffordbeeton @ipswichcouk Clifford, you’re not actually answering the question that I posed in the original tweet - and since. Let’s go back to the issue, rather than whataboutery. So. Do you support the anti-democratic Reform policy of trying to obfuscate free press and stifle scrutiny?
English

@MrTimDunn @ipswichcouk As I said you only have to look at the local council elections to see how the working class folk love Reform now that Labour are now the party of the priviliged. Starmer,Reeves,Miliband,Kendall & Mandelson in their multi million pound houses light years away from the rest of us.
English

I can’t find any info on the specific meetings closed to press that you mention, do you have a source? That’d be helpful for comparison. But this isn’t about Stoke - it’s about what’s happening in Ipswich. I’m not talking about specific meetings here; the “Reform” policy is to block all press contact with its councillors and answering to the press in, or out, of meetings. Do you agree that this is a dangerous policy?
English

@MrTimDunn @ipswichcouk No different to Labour Stoke on Trent Councillors holding meetings behind closed doors without being scrutinised by the press?
English

@cliffordbeeton @ipswichcouk Clifford, do you think that the Ipswich councillors should be able to be scrutinised by a free press? Or do you think that it’s acceptable behaviour to ban *any* engagement and direct questioning?
English

@MrTimDunn @ipswichcouk Luckily it is the electorate that will make the judgement on Nigel Farage, not the blinkered left wing luvvies in their obnoxious London bubble, oblivious to what the working class folk of this Country really want and calling them bigots if they disagree with their Labour masters!
English

@MrTimDunn @ipswichcouk No different to Stoke on Trent Labour Council holding "Closed" meetings that nobody can attend or report on!
English

Well #Eurovisión2026 may have been a bust for the UK, but at least I can console myself by riding @TalyllynRailway into the wee small hours! 🌙 🚂

Charles Holden was born OTD in 1875. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, he transformed the look of the London Underground, alongside other designers, artists and craftsman, something that was labelled "Medieval Modernism” Read about it here

@MrTimDunn If you mean any of the 1986 stock you're wrong. Not guessing.

@the500th_ The train also (still) has LED dot matrix boards alongside which say where it is going, and the next stops.
