No prepared statements here: @burgess truly rocks, and it was a damn pleasure to work together. You could feel the brain-breaking (for me) levels of creativity behind his content. Tremendous thanks for bringing such joy to our solvers on a daily basis. 🔺🔻🙏

The emoji mostly capture my feelings but also want to express my gratitude and awe of @burgess. Putting out illustrations which are ALSO puzzles EVERY day is so hard, and doing so with such a consistent level of quality for almost 5 years is superhuman. Truly amazing work 🫡🫡🫡

a side note on today’s final puzzle. if you’re new to vertex you may not know, but this is an homage to a puzzle from early 2020 by @NocaWu. it diverges in some ways to signify the progress and end of vertex, while also coming full circle.

@FrogPropGod @VertexArchive …the whale gets more detailed down towards the head too, alluding to the progress of vertex. as for the triangle count, i’ve submitted higher count puzzles, but they actually crashed the game and no one at nyt ever fixed that.

@FrogPropGod @VertexArchive it is sentimental. it’s an homage to a puzzle from early on that came to be the background image of vertex for a while. the tail section is exactly the same except for the triangles separating which is meant to evoke the dissolution of vertex…

Vertex has been my favorite smooth brain activity for years, and now the NYT is killing it. :( I even blogged about why it rules: wired.com/story/last-goo…

@burgess I have almost no idea what the vertex picture is today - it both looks like some kind of key with notches for its lock or a recording device with its buttons. BTW I had to reset when almost done because the network here failed temporarily, creating holes

@burgess dear Burgess, I can't make out your puzzle today - what gets dropped in a well?? It's beautiful, but can't tell what it's supposed to be 😱
