today i found a fun, scrolling-based optical illusion that i don't think i can find on wikipedia's list of optical illusions. anyone know if there's a name for this illusory horizontal movement upon vertical scrolling an image?

@parkan @TeddyDief @xuhulk i think so long as you can discern pitched from unpitched sound, you have all the pitch perception needed to ace this task

@mattboch @TeddyDief @xuhulk this is the secret reason I am asking this q, my pitch is very poor but I am consistently amazed by how perfectly I can fill my Hydroflask in darkness

using the pitch of the sound made by water flowing into a container to judge how full it is: what is this kind of perception called? acoustic _____?

@TeddyDief @xuhulk @parkan you can see the volume of the pitched part of the noise (due to the resonance) change pretty clearly in the spectrograph, starting loud (red) fading away (through yellow) to nothing as the bottle fills. that progressive lack of pitched content is what you’re reacting to

@noahfeehan @parkan @xuhulk i think weight is also a factor when holding the bottle...but I would bet you can tell when your bottle is full even if you aren’t holding it, provided you can hear the sound of it filling clearly

@noahfeehan @parkan @xuhulk @TeddyDief is saying he can do it over the phone. I guess we could pretty easily make a game to test this, also I bet we could also devise a bottle that would be really hard to judge this way

@parkan @xuhulk the change in size of the resonating chamber due to the water lvl rising, also has an observable impact on the volume of the filling sound, in addition to pitch

@xuhulk hey that's an excellent point that I hadn't considered! I am def better at this with the bottle I drink from every day than an arbitrary vessel however, now that I think about it, the "feature" that I'm listening for is the change in acceleration at the bend at the neck...

@xuhulk @parkan yeah I was suggesting a separate test where we fill a basin or deep pan...I don’t think one could tell nearly as easily

@parkan So the (winning??) argument is that with a bottle you know well, it is more like pitch matching than like judging the size of a cave by talking
