Michael Laws was reporting on the great international student ‘masters rort’ occurring in our country.
A pathway exploited by the ultimate hot bed of Marxist progressivism (ahead even of local body, and central government) - Universities.
A low quality one year masters course (sometimes with no undergrad degree needed, or a fake degree will get you entrance) is all an international student needs to come to NZ and get on the pathway to PR. Right now, there is 25% MORE Indian - Asian international students doing a masters in NZ than kiwis.
Shockingly 52% of all international students will stay in NZ and get PR and bring their family in. 31% will gain PR directly from their study, and 26% will visa hop their way to another pathway to get PR.
According to MBIE, since 2016, there has been 410,000 international students come to NZ. 207,000 stayed. The bulk of the rest go to Australia or some other country. Very few return to their homeland.
Just remember that India has negotiated
via the nation destroying FTA that NZ CANNOT cap student numbers. Australia was forced to restrict student visas when 200,000 Indians turned up in 2025 to the once lucky country. NZ however will be prevented from being controlling student visa numbers.
NZ is the only country with an India FTA which explicitly states that ‘students are to be uncapped’. In fact the Indian govt took to social media to proudly broadcast this very clause and the fact that Luxon has guaranteed these students 20 hours a week work. Good luck for our kids to find starter jobs.
Now what has been discovered recently in Australia, is that this so called ‘export education’ industry is now a net negative on their economy.
Students work in the HOST country to pay for the costs of study and living , and then on top of that will send money back (remittances) to India. The Indian govt has invested vast sums to providing cheap loans for their citizens to study internationally, it’s a key method for India to export their people around the world.
Universities these days are not the only institutions to offer masters, Polytechs do as well, and the kicker : Private Training Enterprises - PTE’s (enter the ‘learing centres’).
These immigration knock-shops have recently grown like topsy in australia - a English language course will secure you a student visa - and a one year course will allow you to work in NZ while studying for 3 years, despite your course only being 1 year.
As laws laments “By the time the bureaucrats realise the rort - it will be too F’n late!”
Well I think they already know it’s there, and moreso have purposely engineered it to be so.

Just prior to Mel’s call laws interviewed the President of General Practitioners College of NZ who without prompting explained that a lot of trained kiwi drs are leaving and being replaced by immigrant doctors who are of lower quality. It’s madness the tax payer pays hundreds of millions to train doctors and nurses and they leave and we import inferior ones. In March 2025 there were 210,456 on the job seeker benefit. That’s an increase of 12% over 2024’s March quarter. Laws points this fact out, and also highlights the obvious - “ if we continue to load in immigrants - where are they working? a 12% increase in a year is worrying” He then explains the great replacement theory refutes the basis of the original argument behind the theory but says - “ We ARE being replaced, its a fact, the Govt for years has relied on pumping immigrants in, and now so many kiwis leave who we pay for to train leave and no one in Govt is doing enough to keep them here” Acts Brooke Van Veldon’s the Minister of DIA in a February press release stated “I am pleased for the 7th year running that Singh is the most common registered family name for new borns… it reflects diversity”. Yeah nah. That’s not good. For our medical sector there’s two things that the govt could do immediately to improve the situation - 1) Bond medical students, hell write off their student loan for x amount of years served in NZ. This could be partially paid for by removing student loan provisioning for social science BA degrees. These are useless Marxist garbage degrees that this country does not need. 2) And force the universities to drop the policy for med school where Māori students are shockingly given a much lower pass mark (65 vs 90% for non Māori) for acceptance into a course (Otago). I know people personally whose children have left to study overseas after not being accepted in NZ and will never return. ELDERLY MAN STABBED BY EASTERN EUROPEAN MAN IN STAFFORD
The man, who is in his 60s, was walking near the golf course on Thursday evening when he was assaulted from behind by a man in his 20s who is potentially of Eastern European heritage.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Newport Road near Stafford Castle and Castle Golf and Leisure at around 7pm.
He was rushed to hospital where he was treated for his injuries and he remains in a critical condition as of Friday.
