In 1981 I was travelling around Western Sudan with an American friend Daniel. Anyone who has been to Western Sudan will know how hard travel there is. After a long day being thrown around on the back of a truck we arrived at a small village on the edge of the Jebel Marra massif. An old man who was possibly a descendant of the Islamist Mahidist who had been defeated by the British at Ondurman some eighty years previously approached us and offered to share a meal. Probably his only meal of the day. So the three of us, a Christian, a Jew and a Muslim sat around an open fire whilst the old man fried his two eggs and shared them between the three of us. I received this kind of generosity often during my travels in North Africa and Sudan. We should stop with the nonsense that people of a different religion can't coexist peacefully together.
