There has been a lot of coverage about Spirit Airlines closing abruptly, flights being canceled, passengers being stranded, and travel plans being disrupted. Those things matter. But for many passengers, the inconvenience will be temporary. What we cannot move past are the approximately 17,000 workers who are now facing the loss of income, benefits, stability, and the ability to provide for themselves and their families. Behind every corporate headline are human beings. Parents. Caregivers. Workers who gave years of their lives. People now asking, “What do I do now?” The Beloved Community calls us to see them. Not as numbers. Not as collateral damage. Not as people to be forgotten once the news cycle moves on. My prayers are with the Spirit employees, contractors, and families navigating this painful uncertainty. May they receive support, opportunity, and the dignity every worker deserves. #BelovedCommunity #WorkersRights #HumanDignity #Nonviolence365

The current MAGA party: "People should be having more kids." -But we can't afford them. MAGA: "You should work several jobs if that is what it takes to support them." -But if I am working several jobs to support them, then I'm not home to raise them & it cost me more in daycare than I make at some of my jobs. MAGA: "Well then make your parents watch them for you." -I can't because you've made it impossible for my parents to retire. You want them working until they are 70. MAGA: "Well you need to quit making excuses." I think that about sums up the current state of affairs, and I didn't even get into the abortion or birth control issues.

@dieworkwear Whose idea was it to let Jeff Bezos and his wife sponsor this event - and sell tickets? It used to be invitation only.

Today is the Met Gala. Here are some things to keep in mind while engaging in Met Gala discourse: — The Met Gala is a fundraising event that supports the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. — The Costume Institute preserves historical garments, curates public exhibitions, and educates people on how clothing reflects and shapes culture. — In a political climate when public arts funding is being limited or contested, private fundraising efforts like this are even more important. — Many organizations hold galas to raise money for their missions. This includes organizations focused on the arts, LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice, and medical research. The Met is not the only institution that holds galas. — The Met Gala raises money through ticket sales. Major fashion houses such as Gucci often purchase entire tables and invite celebrities to attend the event in their designs. For brands, this functions as a form of marketing, similar to advertising or runway shows. But here, that spending also helps fund a public cultural institution. — Members of the public can later visit the museum and see exhibitions that contextualize fashion as part of cultural history. And their tickets are relatively affordable because they have been subsidized by these fundraisers. — Not all clothing is meant to be practical or "presentable" by conventional standards. Some garments are made as artistic statements. Even if you wouldn’t wear something to the office, you can still appreciate the creativity and technical craft behind it. — Events like this provide work for countless tailors, embroiderers, textile specialists, and artisans. These people often work on other types of cultural productions, such as the costuming for films, theatre, and TV shows. The Met Gala helps sustain these craft industries and thus keeps the production quality high for the areas of culture you care about. — Traditional black tie is never wrong for a gala. In fact, this is how men traditionally dressed for the Met Gala for much of this event's history. Not everyone has the personality to pull off an avant-garde outfit, so they shouldn't be forced into one.

Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, sponsored by UNESCO. Unfortunately, this right is often violated, sometimes flagrantly, sometimes in hidden ways. Let us remember the many journalists and reporters who are victims of war and violence.

My grandma called me asking if I can order her some cases of sprite before they all gone…long story short her neighbor told her SPRITE was going out of business and she was really upset and going through it. Took over 30 mins to explain that it was spirit airlines…🫩

That’s a very strong take—but it mixes real concerns with a lot of conclusions that aren’t universally agreed on. The Spirit–JetBlue merger was blocked mainly on antitrust grounds: regulators argued that removing a major ultra-low-cost carrier could reduce price competition in the long run, even if the combined airline would still be smaller than the “Big Four.” Critics of the decision, like you’re pointing out, say that losing Spirit anyway may lead to fewer low fares and job losses—so from that angle, the outcome looks worse. Supporters of the block see it differently: they argue that JetBlue planned to absorb and effectively eliminate Spirit’s low-cost model, which could have raised baseline prices over time. From that perspective, stopping the merger was about protecting future competition, even if the short-term consequences are painful. The truth is, airline economics are complicated. Job losses, route cuts, and fare changes depend on many factors—fuel costs, debt, demand, management decisions—not just one policy decision or one politician. It’s fair to question the outcome and its real-world impact. But it’s also worth separating what’s confirmed from what’s being framed in a more emotional or political way.

Mifepristone is a safe, essential medicine that so many women depend on in some of the hardest moments of their lives. When access to this care is taken away, the need doesn’t vanish. It just becomes harder to meet—and far more dangerous. Last year, while visiting Louisiana to understand how the shifting landscape is affecting our communities, I heard heartbreaking stories from mothers denied treatment during grave crises in their pregnancies and doctors forced to delay care when every minute counts. Friday’s ruling is a blow to families across the country, who suffer when women are stripped of the ability to make decisions about their own health and futures. Everyone deserves health care that’s guided by science, not politics. apnews.com/article/aborti…

On this day, I honor the courage of the young people of Birmingham who chose peaceful protest in the face of violence and hatred. Their witness helped expose the cruelty of segregation and stirred the conscience of a nation. The Birmingham Children’s Crusade began on May 2, 1963, and when the demonstrations continued the next day, Bull Connor ordered police and firefighters to attack young demonstrators with dogs and high pressure fire hoses. May we never forget that young people have always helped lead the struggle for justice, and that nonviolent direct action remains a powerful force for change. #MLK #BirminghamChildrensCrusade #Nonviolence365

I am among the McClatchy journalists withholding my byline from AI-generated content. I cover sensitive stories that should never be repackaged or altered in any way by artificial intelligence. Whether the story is about sexual abuse or immigrants caged at Alligator Alcatraz, our journalists take great care to ensure that their material is accurate, fair and conveys invaluable aspects of humanity that AI simply can't do.
