Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS)
The Mount Washington summit has experienced quite a wintry start to May, with 4.7" recorded since the start of the month, which has led to snowdrifts building back up along the side of the Yankee Building.

Well... we're pretty sure we're done with snow ;) The left map is average snowfall over the 1991-2020 period, while the right map is observed snowfall for this past winter. We did the best we could based on available data, so if you see errors... sorry? This was not an easy task

Turning old plastic into new plastic is really, really hard. Products made with dyes, flame retardants and other toxic chemicals create a health hazard when heated for recycling, severely limiting the products you can make from recycled plastic. propublica.org/article/plasti…

An early taste of El Niño for the U.S. as the subtropical jet stream roars above the country. It will bring more rain to the drought-stricken South over the next week and contribute to a hefty snowstorm in Colorado on Wednesday.

Large, warm-bodied fish, like sharks and tuna, may owe their dominance to being able to retain their own body heat, but that advantage comes at a cost. According to a new study in Science, these mesothermic species require nearly four times more energy than other fish, and as oceans warm, their tendency to generate heat faster than they can lose it may push these already vulnerable species closer to the brink of extinction. Iceland—previously the only Arctic nation without mosquitoes—no longer holds that distinction. "The detection of mosquitoes just north of Reykjavík in 2025 reflects an ecological shift already underway," write Amanda M. Koltz and Lauren E. Culler in a new #ScienceEditorial. Significantly below-average temperatures will linger through the weekend for much of the eastern and southern regions of the U.S. Temperatures in the Southern Plains and Southern Rockies could drop around 30 degrees below the seasonal average. Texas and parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley may potentially set record-low daily maximum temperatures, with widespread temperatures in the 50s expected. Much-below-average temperatures are also expected in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest regions.
