Reminded today… When web search engines were relatively new, I knew friends who were expert at using Boolean operators to better design their searches. Then it became irrelevant. From Claude: The Extreme Searcher’s Guide to Web Search Engines by Randolph “Ran” Hock — first published in 1999 by CyberAge Books, with a second edition in 2001. It covered the operation and use of major search engines of the day such as AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Infoseek, Lycos, Northern Light, WebCrawler, and Yahoo, including features like phrase searching and Boolean operators. Hock was well-credentialed for it — he was a former librarian at MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, and had held training positions at DIALOG Information Services and Knight-Ridder Information, two of the big pre-web research database companies. It later evolved into The Extreme Searcher’s Internet Handbook, which went through multiple editions into the 2010s. For context on why those AND/OR techniques mattered back then: AltaVista, launched in December 1995, introduced advanced search operators that power users loved — Boolean logic, phrase searching, and domain-specific searches — and for several years in the late 1990s was considered the most technologically advanced search engine available. So there was a real appetite for guides teaching people how to use these tools properly. There were also other books in the same niche around that time, like Find It Online by Alan Schlein and the Researching Online for Dummies series — it was a whole genre during the late ’90s/early 2000s internet boom before Google made searching more intuitive and killed the need for Boolean syntax in everyday use.

We agree on some things. And we don’t agree on some things. But we both believe that we must harness technology to improve the lives of ALL Americans. Silicon Valley must work in service of America, vs the other way around.

PE deals to take public companies private, and SPACs to take private companies public, are all ramping up simultaneously. We will look back at this time in finance history with bewilderment.

Excited to join my good friend @KanuGulati in this conversation.
Jeson Lee@thejesonlee

May 12th in SF, Where the Opportunity Sits in Physical AI by @join_savant For our next Choose Good Quests session, we are hosting @bznotes ,managing partner at @redglassvc and @KanuGulati, partner at @khoslaventures to share about opportunities in physical AI. Physical AI is moving fast — but for founders, the map is still being drawn. Bilal and Kanu have backed some of the most ambitious companies across AI, robotics and autonomy. They’ll share what they’re seeing from the investor seat: where the biggest opportunities are, what makes a strong founding team, how founders should think about wedge, market timing, defensibility, and what kinds of Physical AI companies they’d be excited to fund. Come join us. Link in the thread 🧵

@leehower I agree. Infrastructure doesn’t just function on its own. The glue that holds it together is extremely valuable.

@bznotes Indeed. There's a whole layer of fleet management, w/ physical assets + at least some humans, that will be required to enable the AV future 😉

Saw a Waymo on a tow truck yesterday. And realized these tow truck drivers may still have a job 20 years from now.

Congrats Joe and the Deviation team!
Joe Botsch@jbotsch

Today @deviationcap is officially live! The founders I get to spend time with are wildly ambitious and deeply technical: physical AI, new substrates for the AI stack, agents, developer tools. Things that felt impossible a few years ago are shipping right now. Lucky to be doing this work with this team!
