When it comes to personal finance, no two persons are the same.

1. The Valuation Is Still Speculative
The $40–50 billion valuation is still a projection, not a confirmed market capitalisation. Until the SEC-approved prospectus and final IPO pricing are released, using that figure for definitive Shariah conclusions is premature.
2. One Loan Does Not Represent Total Debt Exposure
Focusing only on the newly consolidated $4 billion syndicated loan oversimplifies the refinery’s capital structure. Proper Shariah screening must assess total conventional debt, refinancing exposure, and other important financing liabilities. Projects of this magnitude are rarely financially simple.
3. Passing One Ratio Does Not Make a Stock "100% Halal"
Debt screening is only one part of Islamic equity screening. Other criteria include: impure income, receivables ratio, cash composition, interest-bearing securities and full business activities.
Assessing a company for shariah compliance based on debt ratio alone is a far cry from the standard procedure shariah advisors use.
4. Market Cap-Based Screening Can Be Distorted by Sentiment
Using market value as denominator means investor optimism can temporarily make leverage ratios appear safer. Also, market cap is not the only factor used in this case.
5. “100% Halal” Is Too Optimistic and Hasty
Saying the refinery "will be 100% halal" before the final prospectus, audited disclosures, comprehensive shariah analysis and complete capital structure are available is hasty and risky.
In Islamic finance, responsible analysis requires caution, qualification and realistic expectations. Let's be careful of what we throw around especially when it involves business/investment because people will be asked about how they make their money.

According to recent corporate filings, Dangote Refinery just consolidated its legacy construction debts into a fresh $4 billion senior syndicated term loan underwritten by a syndicate of 31 lenders (led by Afreximbank and Access Bank). On the flip side, financial advisers are targeting an initial market valuation of $40 billion to $50 billion for the public listing. If we take the conservative lower end of that valuation ($40 billion) and run the standard Islamic equity screen: 4 Billion Consolidated Debt/40 Billion Target Valuation = 10% For a stock to be halal, its interest-bearing debt must not exceed 33% of its market value. At a provisional 10%, the refinery is well positioned within the safe zone. The absolute final confirmation will drop the moment the SEC-approved prospectus locks in the exact initial share price. However, structurally, it is on track to comfortably pass the halal screen. It’s will be a 100% halal investment. The Muslim world’s financial “backwardness” is actually proof that classical Islamic scholars were the most sophisticated macroeconomic thinkers of the pre-modern era and the West accidentally proved it in 2008.
The prohibition of riba was never primarily a moral injunction against greed alone rather It was a systemic design principle to prevent the decoupling of money from productive economic activity. When you ban interest-bearing debt as the engine of capital accumulation, you force wealth to remain tethered to real assets, real partnerships, real risk-sharing.
The entire 2008 financial crisis was a textbook demonstration of what happens when you build an economy on the exact mechanism Islamic jurisprudence spent centuries arguing against: the multiplication of money through money, completely detached from underlying value. CDOs, mortgage-backed securities, credit default swaps: pure riba architecture collapsing under its own abstraction.
Islamic banks largely weathered 2008 better than conventional ones because the structural rules prohibited the specific instruments that caused the collapse.
The insane part: Western economists spent the 20th century mocking Islamic finance as a medieval relic. Then they spent the 21st century slowly reinventing through “stakeholder capitalism,” ESG investing, and calls to link executive pay to long-term performance, the core intuition that capital must carry risk to be legitimate.
Fuqaha in the 9th century called it. No gain without exposure to loss.

I received a LinkedIn connection request from Prof. Folasade Ogunsola @UnilagVC in March. I accepted and we connected. She then sent me her WhatsApp number for ease of communication and we have been chatting and exchanging pleasantries since then.
Two days ago, the number started to send me what were clearly 419 fraud messages. I have reached out to her on LinkedIn and by text message to ask if her WhatsApp has been hacked but there has been no response. It just struck me that the person with the WhatsApp number may have created the LinkedIn profile for fraud purposes.
Anyone who knows Prof Ogunsola should please alert her to this. I am reluctant to share the WhatsApp number here in case it is her real number and it’s just her WhatsApp that has been hacked. Thank you.
