브라질의 X가 정부 압력에도 폐쇄되지 않은건 Elon Musk가 Cloudflare 우회를 활용한 덕분이었네요. 2024년 브라질에서 연방 대법원 판사 Alexandre de Moraes는 X가 “허위정보” 계정을 삭제하지 않는다는 이유로 X 전체 서비스를 브라질에서 차단하라는 명령을 내렸다. 동시에 X 브라질 법인 대표를 체포 위협하고 막대한 벌금도 부과했다. 그러나 Elon Musk는 곧바로 Cloudflare CDN을 활용해 우회했다. X의 트래픽을 Cloudflare 서버로 돌리자, 브라질 사용자들이 VPN 없이도 X에 다시 접속할 수 있게 됐다. 이 우회로 Cloudflare IP가 X 트래픽에 사용되면서, 브라질 정부는 Cloudflare까지 압박하기 시작했습니다. “X를 완전히 막기위해 Cloudflare 관련 IP도 차단하라”고 지시. Cloudflare 우회로 X가 브라질에서 일시적으로 복구된 상황을 보고, “이런 결과가 나올 줄은 몰랐지만 그래도 고맙다”는 Elon Musk의 반응이 있었다. “Unexpected, but appreciated.” (예상치 못했지만, 고맙다.) 이 사건은 단순한 플랫폼 차단을 넘어, 글로벌 인터넷 인프라까지 정부가 규제하려는 움직임을 보여준 사례. 한국에서도 최근 Cloudflare 규제가 있었는데… 한국의 X는 괜찮을까? @elonmusk @Cloudflare

There are moments when the world descends into a darkness so pervasive that neutrality becomes indistinguishable from consent. Tyranny does not merely exist in isolation, it expands, it consumes, and it reshapes the lives of those who never asked to be part of it. The question is not whether such forces will arise, but whether anyone will stand in their way. The United States, for all its flaws and contradictions, has occupied a peculiar position in this regard. It is one of the few nations in history that possesses both the capacity and, at times, the conviction to project power beyond its borders not merely for conquest, but for the preservation of an idea, that individuals are endowed with rights that no regime should be able to strip away. This idea is fragile. It does not sustain itself by mere declaration. It requires defense, often at a cost that is neither theoretical nor distant. There is a tendency in our time to view global leadership as an outdated burden, something to be relinquished in favor of inward peace and stability. Yet history offers a sobering pattern. When powers that uphold a semblance of order retreat, they do not leave behind a vacuum of peace, but a vacuum that is quickly filled by those who wield power without restraint or moral hesitation. The absence of leadership is not neutrality, it is an invitation. To speak of spreading democracy is to speak of something deeper than elections or institutions. It is to assert that human dignity is not bound by geography, that the suffering of people under oppressive regimes is not a distant inconvenience but a moral reality that demands response. This does not mean that every intervention is just, nor that every cause is clear, but it does mean that the refusal to act carries its own consequences, often borne by those who have no voice in the matter. The cost of such leadership is undeniable. It is written in the lives of those who never return, in families that carry absence as part of their inheritance. My grandfather became part of that cost. Yet the alternative is not a world without sacrifice, but a world where sacrifice is demanded by those who impose it without question, without limit, and without regard for human life. What then justifies such a burden. It is not pride, nor the illusion of moral perfection. It is the recognition that if no one is willing to bear the weight of confronting tyranny, then tyranny will not be confronted at all. The question is not whether lives will be lost, but under what banner and for what end. To retake leadership is not to dominate, but to stand, often uncomfortably, between chaos and order, between oppression and the fragile possibility of freedom. It is to accept that history will judge not only what was done, but what was left undone. And perhaps, in that quiet space where questions linger, the answer is not found in certainty, but in the resolve to ensure that fewer chairs remain empty for reasons that could have been prevented.
