Your dream matters. The mistake athletes make is spending too much time looking left and right — measuring their journey against everyone else’s timeline. Comparison creates pressure. Comparison creates doubt. Comparison steals joy from the work you’re doing. Because the goal was never to have the same dream as everyone else. The goal is to chase the one that belongs to you.

Athletes hear it all the time: “You need the newest gear.” “You need the most expensive equipment.” “You need what everyone else has.” But history — and experience — keeps proving something different. Olympic athletes. Professional athletes. Elite competitors in every sport. Many of them reached the highest levels without the flashiest equipment. Because equipment doesn’t create greatness. Confidence, skill, and preparation do. I’ve actually been reminded of this recently in my own life. I’ve always loved golf. When I was younger, people told me I shouldn’t play because it would mess up my softball swing. But I still found ways to get by — probably because I was naturally a righty who got switched over to the left side when I was 13. These days I don’t play softball anymore, but I still enjoy getting out on the golf course. And here’s the funny part… I haven’t gone out and bought the $500–$1000 set of clubs. With little ones at home, there are plenty of other places that money can go — their sports, their activities, their experiences. So when I play, I use my husband’s clubs. And those clubs? They were hand-me-downs from my brother. Nothing fancy. Nothing new. But when I step onto the tee box… I’m often hitting it farther than everyone else. Not because of the clubs. Because I trust my ability instead of relying on the equipment. And that’s something every young athlete should understand: The best players aren’t defined by what they own. They’re defined by: • Their confidence • Their preparation • Their work ethic • Their belief in themselves Don’t wait until you have the “perfect” gear to believe in your game. The most powerful equipment you’ll ever have is the confidence you bring with you.

Attention to detail. This is where athletes begin to stand out because they do the small things consistently — the things many players overlook. It looks like: • Sprinting on and off the field • Listening carefully when coaches are giving instruction • Treating every practice rep like it matters • Following up with college coaches during recruiting • Preparing before games and practices • Moving with urgency instead of needing to be told twice None of these things require more talent. They require discipline, awareness, and pride in how you operate.

You can separate yourself from 50% of the competition just by doing the things many athletes stop doing after a while: Showing up consistently. Working hard even when no one is watching. Doing the extra reps. Taking care of your body. Being coachable. Consistency alone puts you ahead of half the field.

College coaches are building recruiting boards years in advance. The athletes they eventually recruit are often the same athletes who showed initiative early. Sophomore year emails should include things like: • Your name, graduation year, and position • GPA and academic interests • Height/weight and key metrics (exit velo, pop time, throwing velocity, 20-yard dash, etc.) • Your highlight video • Your upcoming tournament or high school schedule • Why you’re interested in their program Make sure to list the important information first. Don’t make the coaches dig through fluff to find what they need.

College coaches are balancing roster spots, scholarships, transfers, and hundreds of athletes. Recruiting rarely moves in a straight line.

Ambiguity is one of the hardest parts of the college recruiting process — and it’s something every athlete has to learn to navigate. One week a coach is responding to your emails. The next week… silence. You might attend a camp where a coach shows interest, asks about your grades, and tells you to stay in touch — but there’s no clear timeline for what happens next. You might hear phrases like: • “Keep us updated.” • “We’ll continue to follow you.” • “You’re on our list.” But no actual offer. For athletes and families, this uncertainty can feel frustrating. It’s easy to start overthinking every interaction or assuming silence means rejection. The truth is, ambiguity is built into recruiting. College coaches are balancing: • limited roster spots • scholarship budgets • multiple graduating classes • transfer portal additions • and dozens (sometimes hundreds) of athletes they’re evaluating. Because of this, recruiting rarely moves in a straight line. Interest can be real even when communication is inconsistent. And opportunities can open quickly when roster needs change. The athletes who handle recruiting best are the ones who learn to operate confidently inside that uncertainty. They: • keep sending updates • continue improving their game • stay proactive with communication • focus on development instead of waiting for validation. Instead of asking, “Why haven’t they answered yet?” They ask, “What can I do today to keep moving forward?” Ambiguity doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It simply means you’re in the process. And the athletes who stay consistent through the unclear moments are usually the ones who end up exactly where they’re meant to be.

THE COLLEGE SOFTBALL RECRUITING ROADMAP What Most Athletes Don’t Realize About the Process Recruiting isn’t built in one moment. It’s built through years of consistent actions. ⸻ 🟡 FRESHMAN – SOPHOMORE YEAR Build the Foundation • Focus on fundamentals & strength training • Start your first highlight video • Track early metrics •Exit Velocity •Pop Time •Throwing Velocity •20-Yard Dash • Prioritize grades and study habits ⭐ Coaches look for improvement and work ethic, not just early talent. ⸻ 🟡 SOPHOMORE – JUNIOR YEAR Get On Coaches’ Radar • Email coaches with your schedule and highlight video • Introduce yourself professionally • Stay active on recruiting platforms • Use social media to share updates • Show hustle and leadership in games ⭐ Coaches can’t recruit you if they don’t know you exist. ⸻ 🟡 JUNIOR YEAR Communication Matters • Follow up consistently with coaches • Ask thoughtful questions about programs • Show versatility and coachability • Update film with recent performance ⭐ Coaches evaluate how you communicate and how you think. ⸻ 🟡 SENIOR YEAR Finish Strong • Continue improving your game • Update highlight videos with senior footage • Stay professional in every interaction • Finish strong academically ⭐ Coaches remember athletes who handle the process with maturity. ⸻ ⭐ WHAT COACHES ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR Skills Hustle Character Consistency** That combination is what earns — and keeps — a college roster spot.

My name is Jennifer and I help softball athletes with the recruiting process. As a former D1 college outfielder and lefty slapper I had no idea where to start with the recruiting process. I spent countless hours figuring out what to say, where to send the emails, and trying to decide where I fit in the college softball world. I spent most of my senior year stressing out. This is why I started helping girls with the recruiting process and it has been so rewarding. The process can be overwhelming and sometimes impossible. You don’t have to do it alone. There are about 1700 colleges that have softball programs. The right school for you or your daughter is out there. My job is to find it. I use an online platform through College Athlete Advantage. The platform has over 900 commits from high level D1 to a local JUCO. I have had a 100% success rate using this software. I also help with email responses, camp invites, and skills video editing among other things. If you or your daughter is a 2026-2028 graduate or a JUCO Transfer looking to play college softball no matter what level, I would love to tell you more about what I do. More importantly, I would love to hear about your daughter’s goals and her journey so far. Send me a message if you would like to hear more about my program 🥎

Huge congratulations to Liberty Cooper on her commitment to continue her athletic and academic career at St. Thomas University – Miami! Liberty has put in the work behind the scenes — developing her skills, strengthening her leadership, and competing with consistency every time she steps on the field. Her dedication to growth, her toughness behind the plate, and her commitment to the process have earned her this next opportunity. St. Thomas is getting a competitor who shows up prepared, embraces coaching, and elevates the standard around her. So proud of you, Liberty. The best is still ahead.

If an athlete wants to last in this game long enough to reach college softball, the focus has to shift: ✔ Prioritize strength and movement quality ✔ Schedule real recovery and off-seasons ✔ Develop multiple skills, not just play games ✔ Protect the athlete’s love for the sport College coaches aren’t just recruiting talent. They’re recruiting durability, coachability, and longevity.
