Thoughts on this game:
I usually do key bullet points, but will cover this one in paragraphs.
First of all, crazy relieved they won a game they deserved to lose
That said, the sheer incompetence of Steve Kerr continues to fundamentally kill this team in crunch time, as he continues his utter failure to understand what lineups need to be played/avoided, and what mistakes need to be forgiven to keep key players on the floor.
Let's go over some of the crazy stuff: Kerr started Saric in Q4 like he did in Q2, except this time, he was being targetted, compounded by terrible offensive play from him singlehandedly. Momentum got killed, and all Kerr had to do was bench Saric, but he instead punished the entire lineup by benching Trayce, Wiggins, and Q, who were otherwise having fantastic individual games.
Kerr instead elected to play a 4G lineup, which, needless to say, is not good enough defensively. What was once a 20-point lead quickly dissipated - shocker - and the team looked completely vulnerable defensively. GPII did well outside with the 4G lineup outside of one play - fouling a 3-point shooter with less than a second on the shot clock. A big mistake for sure, but GPII is too good to pull out of the game over singular mistakes, but that's precisely what Kerr does, just like he did against the Clippers.
Next thing you know, Kerr elects to close with Curry/Klay/Wiggins/Kuminga/Draymond - a completely unreliable group of defenders who can't rebound, compounded by Kuminga's continued unsteady play to close games by failing to box out, failing to rebound, failing to contest with force, and tonight, with a completely costly turnover that absolutely cannot happen to close. Again, GPII needed to be in the lineup next to Wiggins to close, but Kerr has a horrible habit of benching great players for good over ONE play he didn't like from them, and that's unacceptable.
I was begging for Trayce to come back into the game at this point. Kerr did make a move to bench Kuminga, but he replaced him with PODZ, who is even smaller than Kuminga!! Warriors fail to rebound to the final possession when John Collins grabbed an offensive rebound to give his team one more chance to steal the game, but luckily, lost his mind and threw the ball into the stands and out of bounds to help seal the win for the Warriors.
The best defensive closing lineups for this team are as follows:
-Curry, GPII, Wiggins, Draymond, and Trayce
-Curry, Wiggins, Kuminga, Draymond, Trayce
-Curry, Wiggins, Kuminga, Santos, Draymond
-Curry, GPII, Wiggins, Santos, Draymond
As you can see, none of them include Podz or Klay, nor Kuminga/Wiggins at the 4 - you can do O/D subs, but that should be the extent. Size should never be compromised at the 4/5. These are the strongest defensive lineups this team MUST play. Anything outside of this in crunch time or clutch situations is going to continue to cause these meltdowns due to basic fundamental failures, and will be their demise should these things happen in the playoffs.

Dear Steve Kerr:
I've now heard @KlayThompson and @Money23Green say that you asked them to be accountable to help the team be better - that's good. Hard conversations are important, but...
Look in the mirror, @stevekerr. Your strategies are completely outdated and your rotations are the WORST - it's the primary reason you are 22nd on defense, and THAT is why your team sucks. Defense wins championships, and you are one of the worst in the league, so forget championship, you're not even a play-in team. You were 17th on defense last year and 22nd this year. You've completely lost your way since losing Mike Brown. You desperately need an elite defensive coach, so follow Monty Williams' path and go hire one ASAP, mid-season. Swallow your pride and acknowledge you need help because it's clear your players go into every game without nuanced directions from you on defensive coverage game by game, which makes THEM look worse than they actually are. You are underprepared, and that is a disservice to your team and the fanbase.
You ice your own players every game and keep them on the floor when they suck. It's okay to play a player the whole quarter (you needed to do this with Klay last game) when they are on fire. Ride the hot hand, but you won't. Enough with the robotic rotational decisions - it's called in-game adjustment. You take the ball out of Curry's hands for a majority of the game, as if you're not bailing the other team out by doing so and taking away your best player's rhythm on the regular. You want grit and better defense, but you play ridiculous combinations incapable of defending with Saric at the 5 and Kuminga/Wiggins at the 4 every game like they're not completely out of position - not everyone is multi-positional like Draymond, he is a total OUTLIER. Thinking all of your players can do what Draymond can do is actually quite disrespectful to him.
You sat Trayce for roughly 25% of the season when it was clear from training camp that he's your best paint protector and best finisher around the rim and acted like Saric at the 5 was your only path (you are STILL doing this and when he at the 5 is a huge reason you keep blowing leads and momentum - WATCH THE FILM). You should be ashamed of yourself, but does anyone on your team hold you accountable or do you have a bunch of yes-men around you?
You've closed games with CP the whole season when it's clear this forces your best PG in NBA history to the SG, which makes your defense comically worse because you force both your PGs to guard anyone but the other team's PG, which leaves them guarding who? You've paired these aging tiny PGs next to Klay, who not only cannot protect them, he's a liability himself half the time and then you compound on it by putting him at PF. You close games with Wiggins at the 4 when it's very clear he's too weak/small to play that position with any force. You've truly learned nothing from humiliating Team USA by putting Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges at C. Have some shame.
Everything you do is the opposite of what a competitive, winning coach would do. Before you tell others to be better, YOU have to be better. You're good at managing the emotions of your players, but the actual game plan that determines wins/losses is completely awful.
These are some clear paths to help save your job, career, and legacy. Do something different and make fundamental adjustments, or go down sad and tank Curry's legacy as you do - it almost feels like you are TRYING to do this. Be better, Steve. Heed your own advice and look yourself in the mirror.

@Sheridanblog Steve Kerr needs to be fired immediately for his 4th Q coaching
English

Say it with me everyone: GET STEVE KERR OFF THIS TEAM.
This guy keeps asking for grit while starting CP/Curry/Klay together. How can Curry give you "grit" while playing SG? He's 6'2". How can a cooked Klay give you grit at POA or PF? Wtf is this guy talking about? Get him OUT.
Anthony Slater@anthonyVslater
Steve Kerr: “We haven't found that grit that every team needs where you pull together and just play for the group. That's a problem...Until this team really connects in a way that's solely dedicated to winning every game, we're gonna be stuck in this place."
English

@Sheridanblog Jim. You're a man or persistance. Its a reason I follow you. Thank you for the dedication you've shown. Keep it up. It will pay off.
