@OConnorReads @DaileySuzanne @sheehyrw What a great idea! Coping w/ stress is such an important skill for Ss to learn. Coping strategies will support Ss socially, emotionally & academically throughout adulthood. Even practicing yoga & mindfulness during the day as brain breaks can make a huge difference for Ss #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @sheehyrw "Be the one who teaches balance and models healthy living." Modeling how to cope with stressors is part of mentoring youth & the PA Youth Survey shows us this is needed. I'd like to start a yoga and mindfulness club for students this year. #40assets #cbsdpd

We complete our summer-long #CBSD Twitter Slow Chat with this final question from @sheehyrw’s #BeTheOne. I love the collegial relationships & professional ideas we’ve shared with one another over the past 7 weeks. Thank you for trying this innovative approach to PD! #cbsdpd

@cbsdbieks @DaileySuzanne @sheehyrw ❤️this! Not only should we be learning our Ss' stories, but Ss should be building relationships w/ & learning about each other! Using this to build tolerance is a wonderful/brilliant idea! This will build amazing classroom & school community & benefit everyone involved! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @sheehyrw I feel fortunate to have worked with many of my SS last year. I want to spend more time getting to know their story. I plan to use this awareness to encourage tolerance through knowledge of others - their dreams- their goals. I’m looking forward to a great year! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @sheehyrw My goal is to be the ONE who makes each S smile each day 😀It's so important for Ts to set a positive tone & ensure Ss know we care/they are valued. That smile can make all the difference & be accomplished so many ways- greet them, do fun activities, give specific praise! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @mres I see X Ss really thrive when engaged in choice-based, open-ended, hands on, multisensory tasks. Ss crave these & eagerly ask for them. As a sub, Ss often ask for a soft start & Ss assigned passion projects ask to work on them all day -Ss are so focused/engaged on these! #cbsdpd

A twist for our second to last CB Slow Chat prompt. In the spirit of @mres’s value on student choice & autonomy, respond to ONE of these prompts to process some challenging & worthwhile ideas from Lifelong Kindergarten (and yes, of course it’s OK to respond to both!) #cbsdpd

@jill87090747 @DaileySuzanne @mres Yes! Ss ❤️morning tubs, math manipulatives, & getting to "play" while learning! Older students❤️it too, but may not have as many opportunities for this hands on, creative discovery. This is slowly changing, as Resnick states, & I'd love to see more in the upper grades! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @mres I think the primary grades are all about the X student. Morning Tubs, Math Centers, Writers Workshop all are designed for students to expand their creativity. #cbsdpd

@KutzKallelis @DaileySuzanne @mres That's a great connection! When Ss are given choice/opportunities to be creative w/ materials & choose their own pursuits, they do show grit/perseverance! They are engaged & motivated, so they are willing to work hard & stick w/ it, having "hard fun" as Resnick calls it. #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @mres I definitely see X students in my class- and especially since we introduced the "soft start" morning tubs 2 years ago. I also see the X students shine when we do STEM activities. They teach all of us so much about creativity as well as grit and perseverance. #cbsdpd

@CB_JFlanagan @DaileySuzanne @mres I completely agree w/ this sentiment! Not only is it important, but you can see how much the Ss ❤️it & how engaged they are when working on these creative tasks - they are excited, focused, collaborative, asking questions, experimenting, & proudly showing off their work! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @mres In our classrooms it is critical to foster the creativity of "X" students. I see this being fostered in schools through activities such as genius hour, PBL, and student choice in topics of learning. It is so important to be creative in today's society for innovation #cbsdpd

@CarrieMuir4 @DaileySuzanne Great idea! Using tech is so engaging for Ss & there are so many ways to use it thoughtfully & purposefully. You can also use tech as part of your collaboration! Maybe even collaborate remotely w/ classes & professionals too, connecting w/ "experts" as Walker suggests! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne There are so many!! I want to "leverage the tech" and collaborate more this year. I have a new teammate that will do both with me. I'm excited to learn AND to share! Also "Choose Joy!" I gifted the Happiness Advantage to my team...can't wait to get together & discuss.

@OConnorReads @DaileySuzanne I completely agree! Choosing joy, & choosing our attitude, makes all the difference! This not only helps us stay positive & motivated, we model this for our Ss, helping them frame a positive mindset & gain skills needed to become more mindful of choosing joy as well! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne I will do more brain breaks & more varied breaks- ice breakers, community builders, etc. I will also do movement breaks w/ Ss & provide more movement during lessons. I will also more actively promote a peaceful/calm environment, perhaps w/ music & mindfulness exercises. #cbsdpd

@CBjkilhefner @DaileySuzanne I❤️this idea! There's nothing better than the proud face of a S who is given specific praise & recognition for their work! Having an afternoon meeting also provides a bit of a break, time to debrief/reflect, & sharing/celebrating work can inspire all Ss & build community! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne I am going to take more time to celebrate Ss learning. Making Ss aware of their acomplishments will keep them focused on goal setting and growth. I may have an “Afternoon Meeting” to highlight the bright spots in our day. Ss can celebrate with each other!

@DaileySuzanne @timdwalk In Japan, Ts often present tasks just beyond S reach, similar to Vygotsky's "a head above." This is where critical learning occurs, when something is challenging, but not so far beyond reach that it leads to frustration. I think a STEM activity could be a fun application! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @timdwalk but Eastern cultures see struggle as part of the learning process/an opportunity to show strength by persevering thru struggle-showing grit! Ts show Ss they succeeded b/c of their hard work/grit. This is the important aspect of learning/promotes important lifelong skills #cbsdpd

@HeacockElle @DaileySuzanne @timdwalk I agree this approach could produce anxiety for some, but maybe in a low stakes activity it could be a fun alternative strategy to promote independence & creative/critical thinking. Give Ss a chance to try to figure it out on their own but not feel pressure if they can't. #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @timdwalk Not sure we can get away from the accepted practice of scaffolding-reverse may produce anxiety in some Ss and be time prohibitive; but would try the strategy in a math lesson e.g."S" applies area of rectangle concept to find area of an L-shaped polygon then "we, I"

@MrsGriffinCSE @DaileySuzanne @timdwalk One of the things I❤️about this idea is not grading it! If Ss are not feeling anxious over being graded/worried about meeting all requirements, they may be more likely to take risks/see it as a fun project, not a chore. This could be a very memorable, engaging experience! #cbsdpd

@jill87090747 @DaileySuzanne @timdwalk I agree! This is a great opportunity to meet Ss where they are, which may of course be different places for the same task. Some may need more support while others need more of a challenge. Having a "voice & choice" as you stated will also support engagement & motivation! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @timdwalk I think this can also help us differentiate our instruction. Give the students a “task”, they “do” and and then guide your instruction to fit their needs. I also like the idea of them having a voice and choice. #CBSDPD

@CarrieMuir4 @DaileySuzanne @timdwalk I❤️this idea! Great way to "hook" Ss & provide real-world applications. They can problem solve in groups & build collaboration skills. Each group can share their strategy so Ss can see diff ways to solve the same problem, helping Ss make more connections & think flexibly! #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne @timdwalk While teaching in UT we were encouraged to use this approach in math. We would "launch" each new unit with a puzzling, multi-stepped, real-life situation that the Ss would have to figure out. Then, during the unit, we'd work out the launch together. Buy-in & frustration, both.

@cbsdbieks @DaileySuzanne What a great way to build those positive attributes of confidence & pride in the classroom for your Ss! They can feel a sense of ownership & importance as they show other Ss what they “get” to do in your classroom! Great way to change all Ss’ perceptions! #cbsdpd

@jill87090747 @DaileySuzanne I love that excitement of 1st graders! New experiences and activities that they “get” to do, look forward to & think are super cool b/c the older students do them. How can we maintain that level of excitement, novelty, & joyfulness as they move through the upper grades? #cbsdpd

@DaileySuzanne First graders generally feel like they GET to be there! It is such a big deal to GET to be in school for a full day, eat lunch in the cafeteria, and play on the big recess yard! It’s part of the joy of teaching primary grades!
