Reading code with AI agents.
Reading code (not just docs) has always been something I both do and recommend to others when trying to learn how a system works. Up until now, this used to be a really time-consuming process.
With agents, this can be optimized. It still takes time because you definitely should still read and build your own accurate mental model of the entire codebase.
For example, say I want to understand how GRPO is implemented in HuggingFace TRL library. As opposed to starting with docs, I'd start with cloning the repo, running Claude /init on it (scans the repo and takes a bunch of notes), and then I start asking incisive questions that point me to the most valuable files and functions that I can then read myself. Along the way, I might ask Claude to run a few smoke tests - generate some datasets, run some quick example scripts in /tmp, write a few reports, test hypotheses (e.g., is audio data supported OOTB or are custom loaders needed?).
And then I start to build.
Of course, all the good practices on how to effectively work with AI models apply here [1]:
- Ask probing questions and challenge assumptions
- Watch for subtle mistakes (outdated APIs, mixed syntax, knowledge cut off artifacts e.g., GPT-5 does not exist...)
- Checkpoint progress to avoid context pollution
- Understand every line to maintain knowledge parity
- Invest in upfront design
