It would of course be nice if European leaders, as some are suggesting, stopped resisting and agreed to a “pragmatic deal” with Trump by helping to unblock the Hormuz -- but not for free, rather in exchange for reciprocal U.S. support for Ukraine. You get what you want, we get what we need, fair and square, true? The problem is that there should be no illusions about what Europe might ultimately receive in return if it gets involved in cleaning up the mess that Trump himself has created, as with any “cooperation” with him. When Europe grovels before him, agrees to everything, speaks to him like to a problematic child, indulges his monstrous ego -- he responds with insults, threats, daily scandals, he openly disregards European interests, and pleases dictators. When Ukraine immediately responds to his very first call in the Middle East, when it spends years agreeing to every word he says, to every meaningless and absurd “mineral deal,” to every idiotic, empty “talks” -- Donald Trump throws tantrums, hurls insults and threats, openly spits in Zelensky’s face, twists his arms, and lifts oil sanctions on the Kremlin. This man is endlessly obsessed with his “deals,” which the entire world is already sick of, and imagines himself a great dealmaker -- yet in reality he is always the last person from whom one should expect good-faith compliance with any agreement or repaying good with contempt. For him, his “deals” are about filling his pockets, feeding his monstrous ego, getting his 2 minutes of self-admiration on TV -- and in the end, in any case, smearing with filth those who were flattering him. Right now, he is having yet another episode of his delusional idea of appeasing Putin through “investments” and “economic cooperation” (and, of course, by handing Ukraine over to Putin) to the point where Putin might want to “break away” from his suzerain, China. It is not hard to guess what would start all over again if Europeans once more bent to Trump -- more threats, more insults, another destructive undermining of NATO, more crawling on his knees before Putin, and nothing else.

Absolutely terrible -- and no, it is not racist (ala Khalil) to ask Israelis to condemn this horrible violence that our government is not doing enough to stop.

Even through the terror, we can find light. The Chaldean Community opened its doors to 100+ Jewish children and staff as a place of refuge from gunfire. And last night hosted Shabbat services for a synagogue damaged by a car fire. This is a true brotherhood in West Bloomfield.

On this painful day where Jewish Americans faced horrific violence in Michigan, my thoughts dwell on the 32nd Yahrzeit of Ari Halberstam – a special young man whose life was taken far before his time by a senseless, despicable act of terror on the Brooklyn Bridge. The evil that stole Ari from us has only grown stronger over these years. In Ari’s name and in his memory, our resolve to stand against antisemitism and fight back against hate must grow stronger as well, until both are forever defeated and all Jewish peoples of our world may live in permanent peace.

Your Jewish friends and neighbors are tired. Sometimes we just want you to understand why our community and our synagogues being repeatedly attacked is frightening, without explaining it away because of the Mideast or comparing it to other forms of hate.

@yashar In a strange way, Trump, Netanyahu and the mullahs have in only a week, done regime change and brought back the monarchy. Gone is the "islamic" "republic", back is an "Islamic" monarchy... G-d help us all.

A reminder that both Khomeini and Khamenei strongly condemned hereditary rule, saying it was un-Islamic. Khomeini made this argument repeatedly in attacking the Shah and the Pahlavi monarchy during the revolution. Of course, the regime will now claim that Mojtaba Khamenei didn’t inherit the position like a monarch, that he was “elected” by the Assembly of Experts — but we know that’s ultimately nonsense.
