Note: I don't actually tell people how to make tea, I measure physical properties of some tea films.

@guardian Filtered water. This is the biggest change I noticed when I got my Brita, no more scum on tea. In the article at the very end they comment on hard/soft water but somehow forgot that there are easier (and less "funny") ways to get soft water than moving to northern Britain.

@guardian That floating scum on tea is the fat from creamer or milk used. Don't add milk to your tea. Problem solved.

@R_J_Parker Thanks! It’s fun to see how everyone’s already got a technique to remove the film! Meanwhile I was trying to form the strongest film, then using many of those same techniques to see which was the most effective at weakening.

@CEGiacomin And congrats on the paper! It's caused quite a stir! (Or maybe a stop, observe the interfacial film, and then stir! 🤣)

@R_J_Parker Yep, softer water has less visible film, though if measured there’s still a physically perceptible film you’re down to using lab-grade filtered super-pure water. But then we know from earlier research, that tea would taste bitter! (This is all for the non-milk tea).

@CEGiacomin We are very proud of our tap water in Scotland and think it is the best in the world. If people move here just for the tap water, to be honest, they'll fit right in! (It also happens to be soft water here, so if I've understood correctly... Which I'm not sure I have!)

The @guardian has got people really really fired up based on their choice of stock photo. 😅 No tea bags were used, most of the work was milk free, and I think the scum is a phenomenon worth observing! You can read the research here! doi.org/10.1063/5.0059…

@newsnerdsneed 😅🤣😂 I'm very much a tea enthusiast, but perhaps the press's spin on my research was written by a coffee enthusiast.
