Super interesting paper from 2024 on psych AEs in sema phase 3 studies in obesity vs placebo. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39226070/ Bottom line is that semi doesn't make those worse but some fascinating facts about psych AEs and weight loss emerge from this dataset. 1. 25-30% of participants had a psych condition at baseline. 15% were on psych meds. 2. Regardless of intervention, nearly 7% are still moderately depressed by end of study. 3. The greater the weight loss, the better the improvement in psych outcomes from baseline. Losing weight really did make them happier! 4. Initially, both placeo and sema slightly WORSEN as patients begin therapy but then both improve with sema improving measurably more than placebo.

Diving into the CDC database on Lyme is super interesting. cdc.gov/lyme/data-rese… 1. Cases nearly quadrupled from 2022...because of a new definition of what constitutes a "case". In fact, verified cases went from ~20K to now a figure of ~500K being cited as "potentially Lyme related". 🤔 2. Craziest age distribution ever: 5 year olds or 60-70 year olds. Nearly all white. Men a bit more than women. 3. It's nearly impossible to die from it. ChatGPT says 23 deaths over last 5 years. If one really believes the 500K figure, then 1/100K death per annum. That's pretty much the LEAST deadly thing I can imagine.

Paper has fascinating data and confirms that the biggest drops were related to socioeconomic factors among those ABOVE poverty line. Those below barely budged. This is not about taxes or affordability. It's middle class kids no longer finding it cool to smoke. The fatal flaw of the paper is that states most likely to have high taxes on cigarettes are also the ones with exactly the former demographic.

I'm looking forward to reading that but intuitively I find that hard to believe. It's so easy to get hold of out-of-state cigarettes and what has replaced them (vapes, cannabis, etc) is more pricy. Also the demographic most likely to have stopped smoking is the least sensitive to price issues. The opposite is also true : the demographic most likely to still smoke is the one with the least disposable income.

@SnupSnus The incentives are all wrong. They should be compensated for saving money. Right now, it’s exactly the opposite.

@CEOCorbus Your view is certainly a good one for a CEO to have! Obviously the burocrats will have to think about loosing their huget next year if they don't spent it!

I have a $100 budget for groceries. I go to the supermarket but discover that there are only $60 worth of groceries that meet my liking. No sane person would ever then go: "well, I still have $40 left so I might as well spend it on these garbage groceries I don't need or want.". What an odd thing to insist upon doing.

@jrkelly Don't know. Lots of automation on the manufacturing side (surprising) but I can't comment on the R&D side.

@jrkelly Diversity of pipelines + infrastructure. Just mind boggling. We visited a new biologics manufacturing site (4 million sqf) that was built in under 2 years. Fully GMP ready. Just remarkable.
