A couple of months ago my mom had a massive hemorrhagic stroke that placed her in a coma. I spent the next few weeks essentially living out of her hospital room. Even shipped adtwin from her hospital room (story for another day). Wound up getting a massive education on how the brain works, all while watching and holding her hand as various surgeries and procedures were implemented. After six weeks of minimal progress the neurologist advised me as her power of attorney to unplug her from machines and start hospice. For those who have heard both her story and mine you will know she is incredibly resilient. She was raised in a Catholic orphanage in London and started adult life with zero money or family and built a life from scratch. She is also my best friend and confidant. This moment was devastating. We spent the next few days preparing and contending emotionally with the prospect of losing the person who had been the heart of our family. That’s when we received a call from the hospital. She was awake. The past two weeks have been nothing short of a miracle. Her ventilation and trach are gone. She is talking, coherent, every week she is making strides and able to do more physically than she ever has. She is experiencing intense emotions as she realizes what has happened and how fortunate she is (the odds say 14% recover from her injury at her age) and we are also along with her, but she is a warrior. The hospital staff cannot believe it. She is an inspiration of strength. I just wanted to share our testimony as I believe these stories can encourage others, and also just because I am so grateful and needed a place to share, so if you read this far thank you for obliging my indulgence 🙏🏾 special s/o to my wife who did so much emotional labor and planning and managing things with the hospital and at home that would have otherwise fell through the cracks.
