Small businesses are the heart of our Island communities. They create jobs, sponsor local events, support charities, and make PEI a better place to live. Today, and every day, let’s show them some love. Shop local. Share local. Say thank you. Because Local Looks Good on You. ❤️ #SmallBusinessEveryDay #BuyLocal #PEI #ShopLocal

CFIB supports affordability, but the current rules aren’t fair. Many prepared foods sold in grocery stores are PST exempt, while nearly identical items sold by restaurants, cafés and bakeries are still taxed.

🥪Today, Manitoba’s expanded PST grocery exemption takes effect. While it helps lower costs for consumers, many small businesses have spent time updating systems and training staff to implement the changes.

It is disappointing provinces have missed an important deadline on direct-to-consumer alcohol sales across borders. Governments continue to say all the right things on internal trade, but we’re well past due time to see the action match the rhetoric. Governments had a year to get direct-to-consumer alcohol across the finish line and largely failed. Only New Brunswick and Manitoba allow direct-to-consumer sales from every province across the country. This kind of missed deadline does not bode well for more complex files like expanding mutual recognition to the service sector or harmonizing construction sector health and safety requirements by the end of the year.   If we can't get this right when facing a massive trade threat from the United States, it will be our grandchildren's grandchildren that will still be discussing this.  Provinces need to ensure their political sentiment is matched with tangible changes that help small businesses expand operations across provincial borders. If not, it is time for the federal government to step in and use some of its powers to make things happen.

Glad to see Finance Minister @FP_Champagne specifically welcoming ideas on how to support SMEs as he consults on the fall budget. CFIB has many ideas - starting with cutting the small biz rate to 6% and increasing the threshold to $700,000. Champagne seeks pitches for tax changes, energy policy ahead of 2026 budget /via @globeandmail theglobeandmail.com/politics/artic…

"The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) was unimpressed with the energy rebates, calling for a lowering of Alberta’s small business tax rate." “A one-time $100 rebate is simply a drop in the bucket compared to the sustained cost increases businesses are absorbing every month,” Keyli Loeppky of the CFIB said in a statement." calgaryherald.com/opinion/column…
