Young Canadians are facing one of the toughest job markets in years 📉 Missing out on early work experience can slow skill development, delay future entrepreneurship, and impact important life milestones. At the same time, small businesses, which employ 64% of Canada’s private-sector workforce, are navigating high costs and economic uncertainty, making it harder to create entry-level opportunities and train the next generation of talent. A new report by CFIB finds fundamental disconnects at every stage of the hiring process: how employers and youth search for each other, what they expect from a job, which roles young people are willing to take, and what skills employers actually need. Read the report: cfib-fcei.ca/en/research-ec…

Another way Alberta can help reduce insurance costs is by reduce the insurance premium tax to 2%. Currently, the 4% tax applies to every insurance policy in the province, driving up costs for Albertans. #abpoli

This will build on the current Good Driver Rate Cap and ensure that average rates cannot rise by more than five per cent and all average drivers will see their auto insurance premiums capped at 10 per cent at renewal: alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…

CFIB is encouraged to see the Government of Alberta has committed to introducing a rate cap alongside the province’s new Care-First auto insurance system in 2027. Insurance is regularly the largest cost constraint cited by Alberta's small businesses. #abpoli

18% of Alberta small businesses report Strait of Hormuz–related disruptions, making Alberta the 2nd most impacted province next to Saskatchewan. Reducing provincial cost burdens like the fuel tax and small business tax rate can help businesses absorb shocks beyond their control. #abpoli

I have some sad news to share today. CFIB's founder, John Bulloch, passed away recently in Toronto at age 92. John was recognized as a Member of the Order of Canada for his work in creating our country's small business advocacy organization. John called me a few weeks ago, letting me know he had received some tough news from his doctors. When I visited him in the hospital the next day, his focus was not on himself (even after spending the night in the hallway), but on what was happening at CFIB. CFIB is planning a celebration of John’s life and legacy in the weeks ahead, in our Toronto office. This feels right as, a few years back, I named our office the John and Mary Bulloch Building on their 60th wedding anniversary. On a personal note, I will remember John as a great Canadian, a personal supporter and an incredibly funny and fascinating man. He lived the definition of a life well lived – living independently with the love of his life until age 92 and leaving a legacy of a strong organization focused on building a better country. John, I will miss you. CFIB's statement on founder John Bulloch’s passing: cfib-fcei.ca/en/site/rememb…

Taxes, inflation, and red tape for hardworking small businesses and entrepreneurs. Grants, subsidies, and exemptions for those well connected to Carney Liberals. Let's restore a free-enterprise, bottom-up economy that rewards your work, not your connections in Ottawa.

The federal spring economic update includes some welcome measures, but it is not enough to halt the alarming loss of small businesses across Canada. The update continues the federal government’s focus on investments in major projects and large companies, with small and medium-sized firms stuck in the same old mix of red tape and high taxes. I don’t see much that will help Canada avoid a seventh quarter in a row of losses in the net number of small businesses. We need action to stop Canada’s entrepreneurial drought.
