It is disappointing provinces have missed an important deadline on direct-to-consumer alcohol sales across borders. Governments continue to say all the right things on internal trade, but we’re well past due time to see the action match the rhetoric. Governments had a year to get direct-to-consumer alcohol across the finish line and largely failed. Only New Brunswick and Manitoba allow direct-to-consumer sales from every province across the country. This kind of missed deadline does not bode well for more complex files like expanding mutual recognition to the service sector or harmonizing construction sector health and safety requirements by the end of the year.   If we can't get this right when facing a massive trade threat from the United States, it will be our grandchildren's grandchildren that will still be discussing this.  Provinces need to ensure their political sentiment is matched with tangible changes that help small businesses expand operations across provincial borders. If not, it is time for the federal government to step in and use some of its powers to make things happen.

Small businesses keep showing up for their communities—today and every day. ❤️ In Alberta, 66¢ of every dollar spent at a local business stays in the community, compared to just 8¢ with online giants. That difference shows up in local jobs, vital services, and the unique character of our neighbourhoods. Let’s show them some love 💛 The Big Thank You Contest runs June 29 – July 13—get involved and celebrate the businesses that power our communities. Heading out to explore Canada this summer? Just don't get too attached to that great local wine, craft beer, or spirit you discover along the way—you probably won't be able to have it shipped home. Governments are now 24 days past their own deadline to implement direct-to-consumer alcohol shipping. For governments that say internal trade is a top priority, the follow-through has been severely lacking.

When governments set deadlines for businesses, business owners move mountains to comply because missing one can mean fines and penalties. Yet when governments missed their own May 31 deadline to implement direct-to-consumer alcohol shipping, nothing happened. These missed commitments erode confidence that governments will follow through on future agreements and timelines. Canadians and small producers deserve better. #InternalTrade #CDNPoli

CFIB is glad to see this reversal. With many small businesses already facing tight margins, policy changes that drive up costs for consumers put revenue at risk. More stability is good news for Alberta’s entrepreneurs, particularly as we head into summer. #abpoli @DaleNally_AB

Thank you Minister Dale Nally @DaleNally_AB for directing the AGLC to reverse their decision to increase the minimum pricing for alcohol sold at bars and restaurants. This will provide business and Albertans with greater certainty and consistency. Our hospitality and liquor industry play a key role in Alberta’s economy and we’re proud to support them and the great work they do providing unique experiences for Albertans and visitors alike.

CFIB is calling on the government to take a more permanent approach to improving affordability and competitiveness for local businesses by reducing the small business tax rate to 0% and increasing the small business income threshold to $700,000. If a rebate remains the primary tool available, it must be extended to small businesses, with a fair and meaningful amount set at $250 per business, and made available when applications open for individuals on July 1. #abpoli

CFIB is deeply disappointed with the design of the Alberta Energy Rebate. The Rebate overlooks a critical part of our economy, and the employer of 61% of Alberta's private sector workforce: small businesses. Entrepreneurs across the province continue to face sustained pressures from rising energy, fuel, insurance, property taxes and operating costs. Fuel alone is the top cost constraint for 75% of Alberta’s small businesses, nearly 10% higher than the national average. The $100 rebate does little to offset these concerns. #abpoli

Small businesses have been clear about the impact of crime and safety issues on their operations. CFIB is glad to see the federal government's Bail and Sentencing Reform Act receive Royal Assent, providing tougher sentencing measures for repeat and violent offenders. CFIB hopes this will translate into less crime experienced by small businesses at the street level. #cdnpoli
