On his birth anniversary today, we pay tribute to the Bharat Ratna Awardee and one of the greatest Indian vocalists in the Hindustani Classical Tradition, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. He is known for his mastery of the khayal form of singing as well as for his soulful renditions of devotional music. He was the first musician from India whose concerts were advertised through posters in New York City. He was also the first Hindustani vocalist to receive the Platinum Disc in 1984. He was widely recognised across India due to his performance in "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara”—a timeless tribute to national integration and the cultural diversity of India, originally composed by him.
