The @CGS_RSA participated in the @SANSA7 launch of the Natural Resources Management (NRM) Programme in Willowvale, Eastern Cape, held at the Nqadu Great Place as part of the King Hintsa Commemoration events. The programme uses Earth observation and space science technologies to advance sustainable natural resource management. It aims to enhance land-use planning and informed decision-making, empower local communities, and unlock economic opportunities in critical sectors such as climate adaptation, renewable energy, and eco-tourism.

The @CGS_RSA participated in the 6th Harry Gwala District Science Week and Career Expo, hosted by the @SANSA7 from 4 to 8 May 2026. The event engaged learners in Grades 9–12 from Kokstad, Mzimkhulu, Pholela, and Ixopo in KwaZulu-Natal. The initiative aimed to promote STEMI (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation) careers and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. CGS used this platform to highlight geoscience career opportunities and raise awareness of the critical role the discipline plays in national development. #geoscience #careerexpo #youthempowerment

The @CGS_RSA participated in the Zambia Trade and Investment Forum, which brought together representatives from the South African and Zambian governments, industry leaders, development partners, and thought leaders. The Forum provided a strategic platform to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral economic cooperation while unlocking investment across key sectors. Mr Hakundwi Mandende, Manager for Minerals, Energy, Environment and Groundwater, served in a panel discussion under the mining theme. The session underscored the critical role of regional collaboration and investment across the mining value chain, including exploration, mining operations, equipment supply, and financing. The discussions highlighted the importance of geoscience data as a strategic enabler for mineral exploration and evidence-based decision-making.

The @CGS_RSA hosted the official opening ceremony of the PanAfGeo+ programme on mineral resource evaluation. The CGS working with the Geological Survey of Portugal, and Geological Survey of Kenya led the opening ceremony to effect the Work Package 2 of PanAfGeo+ initiative. On the field capacity building initiative will be conducted in South Africa’s Bushveld Complex and be led by a wide range of local experts including 20 young trainees from at least 15 different countries. The training aims to imbue Africa’s developmental imperatives in advanced and sustainable mineral resource evaluation.

On 23 April 2026, the @CGS_RSA together with the @DMPR_ZA hosted a delegation from Zimbabwe as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in the mineral and geoscience sector at its Head office, Pretoria. The visit served as a strategic benchmarking platform, enabling meaningful knowledge exchange and the sharing of best practices between the Zimbabwe Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and the CGS. #geosciencediplomacy #geoscience

The @CGS_RSA hosted a delegation from The Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) China for a technical discussion focused on offshore mapping. This engagement supports the CGS mandate to explore and map South Africa’s offshore areas, while strengthening on international collaboration and the exchange of technical expertise in marine geosciences. SIO delegation concluded the discussions with a tour of the CGS facilities, where the CGS' geosciences information and data is curated and catalogued. #geosciencediplomacy #collaboration #marinegeology

The @CGS_RSA supported the @DMPR_ZA led by Honourable Minister Gwede Mantashe in a two-day community outreach programme held at KwaMdakane in Newcastle on 15 & 16 April 2026. The initiative aimed to provide targeted social support to vulnerable residents of the KwaMdakane community, particularly senior citizens aged 65 years and above.

The @RSA_CGS and @jogmec_jp concluded a collaborative framework on 16 April 2026, reinforcing the long‑standing bilateral cooperation between South Africa and Japan. The agreement gives credence to the CGS’s Geoscience for Diplomacy Programme, which was formally advanced during a recent technical visit to Japan. Through this partnership, both institutions have committed to advancing joint geoscientific research, and to strengthen institutional capabilities and support informed decision‑making in sustainable mineral and energy resource management in both countries. #collaboration #geoscience #geosciencediplomacy
