BREAKING: Germany is officially demanding that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately! Also, Germany is contributing absolutely zero military capability to make it happen. On March 3rd, Chancellor Friedrich Merz sat in the Oval Office and told President Trump that the United States and Germany were on the same page regarding Iran. Two weeks later Merz told the Bundestag there is no convincing plan for how this operation could succeed and that Washington did not consult Berlin before starting the war. His Defence Minister Boris Pistorius was more direct. What does Trump expect a handful of European frigates to do in the Strait of Hormuz that the powerful US Navy cannot do, he asked. This is not our war. We have not started it. The answer to that question is the answer nobody in Berlin wants to hear. European frigates could escort the tankers that carry the energy that heats German homes through the strait that Germany demands Iran reopen. The reason Berlin is not sending them is not strategic restraint. It is that decades of underinvestment left the Bundeswehr without enough operational vessels to sustain deployment in contested waters. Germany does not refuse because it chooses not to. Germany refuses because it cannot. Merz’s spokesman said the conflict has nothing to do with NATO. He added that Washington explicitly stated at the outset that European assistance was neither necessary nor desired. Merz told the Bundestag that Germany lacks the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union, or NATO that the Constitution requires. Every sentence is legally correct. Every sentence is also an admission that Europe’s largest economy built its defence around the assumption that someone else will always keep the straits open. Germany is not alone in refusing. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas reported no appetite among members for extending the Aspides naval mission to Hormuz. Italy said sending ships to a war zone would mean entering the war. Spain rejected participation. France said it is not party to the conflict. Australia declined. Japan signed the joint statement pledging to contribute to safe passage but faces constitutional constraints on deploying force. Trump praised Tokyo for stepping up to the plate, unlike NATO. The one European country actually pulling the trigger is Greece, whose Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia shot down two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting Yanbu on March 19th. President Trump responded to the broader European refusal by saying he does not need any help. Then he warned it would be very bad for the future of NATO. The deeper layer is energy arithmetic. Germany imports a significant share of its gas and oil through supply chains dependent on Hormuz remaining open. The fertiliser that feeds German agriculture moves through the same chokepoint. The helium that cools European semiconductor lithography comes from the same Qatar complex now offline for three to five years. Germany urgently demands a strait reopen while contributing absolutely nothing to the reopening and absorbing the consequences in rising energy costs, industrial shortages, and food price inflation that will hit voters before the next election. ARD polling shows 58 percent of Germans oppose the war. Twenty-five percent support it. Pistorius is reading the domestic mathematics correctly. But the domestic mathematics and the energy mathematics point in opposite directions. The public does not want involvement. The economy cannot survive prolonged non-involvement. The strait that Germany refuses to defend is the strait that Germany cannot afford to lose. Merz said on March 3rd that he and President Trump were on the same page. It took thirteen days for Berlin to say this is not our war. It has been twenty days since the Oval Office meeting. The strait has not reopened. Full analysis: open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…

Struggling to stick to a routine Try these 3 tiny tweaks: 1. Wake 10 mins earlier for a 5-min stretch 2. Swap 10 mins of scrolling for a quick walk 3. Bed 15 mins earlier with a book (no screens!) Small changes = big energy gains.
