The real reason is because we absolutely refuse to draw city boundaries in a coherent way. All of these cities have a population under 1m solely due to weird borders, with the metro area of all these cities easily clearing the 1m mark
Way more to do with how city limits are drawn in the US than the US not having major population centers. Example would be Cincinnati with a city population of 315K but a metro of 2.3 million. Meanwhile Prague has a city population of 1.4 million with a metro of 2.3 million.
