When explaining that there were too many sessions to choose from and wanting to attend them all, the best description I've heard of #Museums2024 so far has been 'It's like a music festival but for museum nerds'. Apt, really!

@JepsenJupe This is really awful news, I'm so sorry to hear it. Sending you my very best wishes.

@foxlanebooks Count another one off! Been meaning to look to see what you had for a while! :)

So quiet today. We need to sell about 30 books a day to break even and more to make any profit...
We've sold 8
So we need to sell another 22 books before midnight. Yikes!
Anyone want a book?

Commissions are open at my instagram, have 2 spots available so if you’re interested in a hand embroidered piece, let me know, meanwhile I’ll be making the tube man dance in my living room ‘till I get some work

@museumhour A6: A more practical piece of advice would be to look at networking and see what free training and workshops are out there if you can. MD is a fantastic resource!

@CLH1192 All the red flags, but it's true... it happens a lot.
A lot of assumptions, I particularly found this in my FoH role more so, with people wrongly assuming that it was a nice easy job that didn't require a lot of skill, which is totally wrong. #MuseumHour
English

Q6: If you could give 1 piece of advice for anyone training for a museum career what would it be? #MuseumHour
English

@museumhour Absolutely true! Every role is skilled in a museum, and it's rare for their not to be some overlap with other departments in whatever you're doing!
English

@museumhour A5: Head of Heritage is exceptionally vague. Job titles need to make sense and give a sense of what's happening in that role where possible. Making things sound important isn't the best route!
English

Q5: #MuseumHour let's share a variety job titles and roles within our sector. What have you noticed about the variety of roles within museums? Do you think job roles changed much over time?
English

@museumhour A4: Not really knowing all of the different ways you can work in a museum - it's not all curators and FOH!
Development opportunities vary wildly in my experience - if you're in a team of 3 staff, then the only way to progress can be to move on, and that's so sad when you love it!
English

Q4: What challenges do you think people face when it comes to museum careers (both entering the sector and in terms of development opportunities)? #MuseumHour
English

@museumhour I've personally found the level of theory in an MA isn't overly transferable to the every day running and ground woke of a museum. In addition, often asked for in roles and fully not needed! A lot of work to be done around this, imo!
English

Q3: Did you know that it's #NationalCareersWeek? What opportunities are there for getting into a museum career? Share some great opportunities for career development and gaining sector skills! #MuseumHour
English

@museumhour A2: As difficult as many others will know in such a competitive sector! I tried to move into the career with volunteering experience and no postgraduate degree, but never got anywhere. Worked a lot of hospitality jobs inbetween! I think luck is a huge factor! #MuseumHour
English

Q2: Expanding on the previous question, for those who are working in the museum sector already, could you share a brief summary of your career path? #MuseumHour
