Ethereum: what actually went down? Here’s a recap on what we unpacked at our CML x @ETHLDN event 1. Ethereum’s vision has changed over time Ethereum started with a much broader vision around local-first apps, dApp browsers, and everyday non-financial use cases. But as the ecosystem grew, the focus shifted heavily toward protocol design, scaling, and keeping the base layer functional under pressure. 2. L2s solved a real problem but not without tradeoffs The rise of rollups helped Ethereum scale in a way the base layer couldn’t at the time. But while L2s improved speed and usability, they also introduced new concerns around sequencer centralisation, infrastructure complexity, and whether they’re adding enough value beyond just scaling. 3. Ethereum’s roadmap is still evolving A big theme of the night was that Ethereum is still very much a moving target. Priorities shift as research develops, new constraints emerge, and better solutions appear. 4. The strongest blockchain use cases are still pretty concentrated There was broad agreement that the clearest product-market fit today is still in money and identity. Payments, tokenisation, stablecoins, and naming/identity layers like ENS continue to stand out. 5. Zero-knowledge tech is powerful, but the practical limits still matter ZK continues to be one of the most important pieces of Ethereum’s future because it enables both scalability and privacy. But the conversation also made clear that while the theory is exciting, a lot of use cases especially around ZKML and media verification are still early and need major improvements before they become truly scalable. 6. AI and crypto are starting to intersect in a more practical way One of the more interesting takeaways was that AI might be finding real product-market fit in crypto through payments infrastructure. 7. Ethereum’s next upgrades are really about efficiency A lot of the discussion around upcoming forks came back to one thing: using Ethereum’s block space and timing more efficiently. Upgrades like EPBS and block-level access lists are less about flashy narratives and more about reducing wasted capacity, improving throughput, and making the chain work better under the hood. 8. Censorship resistance is still one of the hardest real problems FOCIL sparked one of the biggest tensions in the room. The goal is to reduce censorship risk by giving more parties the ability to force transactions into blocks. But that opens difficult questions around block builders, compliance, regulation, and whether decentralisation can really hold up under political and legal pressure. 9. In the long run, users may not care which chain they’re on A strong closing theme was that most users probably won’t choose products based on chain loyalty. What will matter is whether the experience is fast, cheap, reliable, and intuitive. Massive thank you to our speakers, partners, and everyone who joined us for such a thoughtful conversation. Now over to you 👇 What’s your biggest takeaway on where Ethereum is heading next?

What’s next for Ethereum? After last night, one thing is clear, the future isn’t a straight line. Huge thank you to everyone who joined our CML x @ETHLDN special edition. We kicked things off with a series of sharp lightning talks, breaking down zkEVMs, post-quantum signatures, and Ethereum’s evolution from then → now → next. Then we moved into a fireside chat, unpacking the bigger questions around Ethereum’s roadmap, protocol ossification, and long-term resilience. Massive thanks to our speakers: @DeclanFox14, @roxananasoi, @monsieur_kus, @kevaundray, @james_zaki for the amazing insight you brought to the room. Thank you to our co-host @ETHLDN and our sponsors @Bybit_Official, @_vault12_, @CUDOS_, @reedsmithllp, your support makes this possible. And of course, thank you to the entire CML team and everyone who showed up. Now over to you: Where do you think Ethereum is heading next?
