The 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team is part of the California National Guard and has been deployed to Los Angeles as part of Trump’s repression of anti-ICE protests. It is worth emphasizing that this is NOT a military police unit.
The Brigade Combat Team is the US Army’s basic tactical unit for combat. It is a combined arms unit designed for regular and irregular warfare. Its purpose, per the armies own documents, is to defeat an enemy through force of arms. This unit has been deployed to places such as Afghanistan and Kosovo and was also mobilized during the 2020 George Floyd uprising.
The government is not simply mobilizing “emergency responders” as the National Guard are often portrayed by army propaganda. This is a combat force, meant to be deployed against enemies of the state, for the purposes of killing or capturing those enemies and destroying their combat capabilities.
Trump has declared war on Los Angeles, on immigrants, on our class. We must organize to resist this creeping authoritarianism and defend our communities and class against state-sanctioned terrorism.
