#Pakistan: CPJ welcomes the Kenyan Supreme Court’s recognition that the fatal police shooting of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was an unlawful violation of his right to life. However, the court’s refusal to compel the prosecution of officers responsible means that, nearly four years after his killing, accountability remains unfinished. #Pakistan: CPJ calls on authorities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir to immediately and unconditionally release journalist Syed Farhad Ali Shah, who was detained by police after covering demonstrations called ​by a recently banned alliance of civil society groups. Ali Shah was taken into custody on June 20 in Bagh district under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, a colonial-era law that allows detention without charge for up to six months. On June 25, Patil -- who had recently defected from his party to join an ally of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -- verbally abused and threatened journalists questioning him about his political switch, reportedly telling them, "If you come again, I will kill you." Although Patil has since apologized following protests by journalists, those who intimidate or threaten the press must be held accountable.
