Some themes from the morning session: genomic innovation is a tool but we need social contexts of the why, not just the what. There are broader issues of contexts, values, systems, Indigenous knowledge, and global inequality that need to also be considered. #CRISPRconOneHealth

A few points from early discussion: Science is not sufficient without also discussing values as values drive behavior. Also, the discussion on genetics is still siloed (animal/agriculture/human). #CRISPRconOneHealth

Ouedraogo: What funders need to understand is access to the technology is key. And making sure that on the development of the technology, make sure local scientists are involved. Partnership is key. #CRISPRcon2020

Browning: Ultimately the demand of where these products are coming from, it’s important to have feedback from developing countries whether or not they want to take the technology and employ it. Ultimately it’s a sovereign decision. #CRISPRcon2020

Browning of @gatesfoundation: Transparency is critically important. The investments that we make, we have a publicly accessible database. If we’re making investments, we need to ensure that the tools, services, and goods actually reach the intended beneficiaries. #CRISPRcon2020

.@ShahramSN: It’s really important as a society that we analyze different products… and areas of public funding that we know there will be a market failure if left only to private investment. #CRISPRcon2020

Ouedraogo: I really think that what we need to consider today are mostly areas of accessibility of technology, availability of data, and to make sure we are not using new technologies to only serve those who already have the power. #CRISPRcon2020

Couldn't agree more. I wish funders and investors would require (not just recommend) open sharing for research of all generated materials (not just publications) to make the most of their donation dollars for research. Recommendations don't really make it happen. #CRISPRcon2020
