Iowa's AEAs are part of the GOOD in our state's educational system. Hindering their work hurts Iowans.

I literally CANNOT with folks defending traditional grading by saying it prepares students for the ReAL WoRLd When’s the last time a teacher got docked pay for late report card comments? Or could opt out of work with a 0? Or couldn’t try again after bombing an observation?

@guzdial To what extent do you think that K12 teachers skip societal impact discussions because they don't have the exposure and practice like they get with many other topics? It's hard to teach what we don't know.

31% of CS teachers don't believe that equity issues should be in computing classes. 60% don't teach about impacts of computing on society. 2/2 landscape.csteachers.org

@ass_deans Grades should not be a competitive sport. They should reflect what a student can do and know. Therefore all students are capable of an A.

Yes, we expect student performance to improve! However, we’re not adjusting the expected grade distribution limits to allow for more A’s and B’s.

@Jennifer_Manly I have had colleagues claim that taking this approach will mean students are less engaged and will take advantage. I find the exact opposite. They don't start the semester in a seemingly unfillable hole so they work harder. That, and they know I care about learning not "rules"

And I guess all I'm saying is -- I will NEVER be an instructor or teacher who penalizes students for late work or doesn't accept work past a deadline. There is no way every student is sharing what is going on in their lives (nor should they have to).

I grant extensions in my intro CS course, no questions asked, no explanations needed. Every year, some students choose to share why they're requesting an extension, and every year, I am reminded that there are many, many things way bigger than a project deadline.
