The Coalition to Stop Maternal Mortality due to Unsafe Abortion (@CSMMUA_) convened its Quarter One meetingto strengthen coordination and sharpen advocacy efforts aimed at advancing women’s health and rights in Uganda. The meeting brought together coalition members to plan strategic advocacy engagements around Supreme Court Constitutional Appeal No. 1 of 2026 (arising from Petition 10), a case with significant implications for access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Discussions also focused on identifying high-impact, time-sensitive priorities to inform the coalition’s 2026 annual work plan, which will later be presented to the Steering Committee for consideration and guidance. #SafeAndLegalCare

In his address at @CSMMUA_’s quarterly meeting , Richard Muganzi, Director of Programs at the secretariat , emphasized the critical transition the coalition is making from planning to action. He reflected on the coalition's growth, noting that what began as a small group of five or six organizations has expanded into a significant movement capable of influencing national policy. Muganzi stressed that the coalition's strength lies in its diverse membership and collective voice, which allows it to challenge restrictive reproductive health policies more effectively than any single organization could. He highlighted the importance of the 2024–2028 strategic plan as a roadmap for progress but urged members to move beyond theory and focus on tangible implementation in 2026. His called for unity, encouraging members to remain committed to the shared goal of reducing maternal mortality through bold advocacy and legal action. #SafeAndLegalCare

The quarterly meeting discussions fed into the documentation of best practices on abortion advocacy and broader #SRHR work contributing to the coalition’s wider research and learning agenda. Through this engagement, #CSMMUA coalition members continued to build a stronger, coordinated voice in advancing policies, advocacy, and evidence that protect the health, dignity, and the reproductive rights of women and girls. #SafeAndLegalCare

Edith Sifuna (@EdySifuna), the coalition coordinator, opened the @csmmua_’s first quarterly meeting of 2026 by expressing gratitude to partners for the support and resilience. She emphasized that the importance of these quarterly sessions is to analyze progress throughout the year as the coalition works toward the goals established in the 2024–2028 strategic plan. The primary objective for this session is to define advocacy priorities in response to Supreme Court Constitutional Appeal No. 1 of 2026 and the Petition 10 judgment, while also discussing global policy developments that affect abortion advocacy. #SafeAndLegalCare

“On behalf of the steering committee, we welcome you to our first quarterly meeting of this new year. We've come from very far as the #CSMMUA coalition, i always like to say that behind every statistic of maternal mortality is a woman with dreams, a family, and a future. Our responsibility as a coalition is to ensure that those futures are not cut short. We continue to reaffirm our commitment to the work that we do collectively, and advocating for evidence-based policies, expanding access to accurate information and services, and ensuring that no woman dies from a preventable cause. We believe that this is not a very new fight, but it's an old fight with new strategies, and I believe we are going to have great work this year.” - Caroline Aruho (@AruhoCarwakoma) | CSMMUA steering committee. #SafeAndLegalCare

A Retrospective Study on Teenage Pregnancy and Abortion in Kamuli, Mayuge and Wakiso Districts reviews adolescent pregnancy and abortion trends in three high-burden districts in Uganda. The study, conducted by CEHURD, analysed 13,162 deliveries across six Health Centre IVs between October 2019 and June 2023. It found that 28 percent of all deliveries were among girls aged 10 to 19. It also reviewed post-abortion care data in four facilities and found that 46 percent of those who received care were adolescents. Beyond the statistics, the study examines the causes of teenage pregnancy and abortion, girls’ experiences, and the barriers to returning to school. The findings are informing advocacy for stronger sexual and reproductive health and rights protections for adolescents, with plans to publish and expand the research nationally.
